Week 52, 2011: December 26 - January 1

Week 1: January 2 - January 8

In 1906, a steam locomotive-hauled train crosses the Solkan bridge (in present-day Slovenia close to the border with Italy) soon after its completion.

Week 2: January 9 - January 15

Patrick Stirling's 4-2-2 G Class "Single" No. 544 pulls a rake of Great Northern Railway six-wheeled coaches. This locomotive features a dome boiler, a later modification added by H.A. Ivatt.

Week 3: January 16 - January 22

Newly refurbished former South African Railways Class NG G16 2-6-2+2-6-2 Garratt steam locomotive number 143 built by Beyer, Peacock and Company pulls a passenger train on the Welsh Highland Railway departing Caernarfon with a train bound for Pont Croesor in August 2011.

Week 4: January 23 - January 29

Three EMU trains of Seoul Metropolitan Subway's Sin Bundang Line await their next assignment in July 2011.

Week 5: January 30 - February 5

A preserved EuskoTran electric locomotive pulling three coaches crosses one of the rivers of Bilbao in the autonomous community of the Basque Country in 2005.

A TGM tram runs on the line at Sidi Bou Said in 1937. Inaugurated in 1937, TGM was the first railway in Tunisia.

Week 18: April 30 - May 6

The rear-gunner in a Sikorsky UH-53 helicopter watches the end of the new Mazar-e-Sharif to Termez, Uzbekistan, railroad stretch into the distance. When completed, the 47-mile long (76 km) line will provide a valuable commercial link between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan across the Amu Darya River via the Afghanistan–Uzbekistan Friendship Bridge.

Peppercorn Class A1 Pacific 60163 Tornado hauls an excursion train during the Great Southern Steam Gala on the Watercress Line running from Alresford to Ropley station, England, in June 2010.

Week 20: May 14 - May 20

Workers pose alongside a streamlined German DRG Class 05 locomotive as it steams for the first time in March 1935. The class was the fastest steam locomotive to run in Continental Europe, and briefly held the Land speed record for steam traction. This locomotive, number 05 001, is the only member of the class to be preserved.

Week 22: May 28 - June 3

The Birmingham AirRail Link is a fully-automated cable-driven people mover linking Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International railway station in England. Its route is 585 metres (1,919 ft) long and it and carries three million passengers per year.

Week 23: June 4 - June 10

An automated ballast cleaner train operated by VolkerRail deposits cleaned ballast back on the track in the Netherlands as two railway maintenance workers ensure that the ballast remains on the track.

Week 24: June 11 - June 17

This lithograph, originally published in London in 1894, is titled Locomotive Engine, 'The Rocket', 1830. However, despite the title, the locomotive depicted is not in fact Rocket, which was yellow at the time, and of a different external design. The locomotive is actually Stephenson's 1830 locomotive Northumbrian.

Week 25: June 18 - June 24

Russian 4-6-0 steam locomotive number U127, the official steam locomotive of Vladimir Lenin, was built in 1910 and used to pull passenger trains on the Tashkent Railway. It received its distinctive red livery in 1923, and was withdrawn from service in 1937. The "Red Locomotive," as it came to be known, was preserved and is now on static display at the Museum of the Moscow Railway.

Week 26: June 25 - July 1

Tokyo subway and commuter lines cross the Kanda River at Ochanomizu Station. The lowest level is the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line while trains of JR East's Chūō Rapid Line and Chūō-Sōbu Line stop at the station.

Week 27: July 2 - July 8

A 1915 postcard shows a four header train with a rear helper locomotive climbing the Denver and Rio Grande Western grade up Soldier Summit in Utah. This same grade is in use today as part of the Central Corridor between Helper and Provo along Amtrak's California Zephyr.

Week 30: July 23 - July 29

The Tren a las Nubes ("train to the clouds") in Argentina crosses one of the many bridges along its route, which was originally built to serve borax mines in the area, as it ascends to an altitude of 4,220 metres (13,850 ft).

Week 33: August 13 - August 19

Sierra Railroad locomotives numbers 3 and 8 lead a freight train in 1979. Sierra No. 3 is known as the "movie star locomotive" for its many appearances in film and television, including The Virginian (1929) and Back to the Future Part III (1990).

Week 34: August 20 - August 26

LNER Thompson/Peppercorn Class K1 62005 "Lord of the Isles" pulls an excursion train over Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland. The viaduct, which was opened in 1901 by the West Highland Railway, has been used in a number of films and television shows including Monarch of the Glen, Stone of Destiny and three of the Harry Potter films.

"The Lineman," also known as "The Railroad Guard," painted in 1884 by Danish artist L. A. Ring, depicts a railroad employee whose job was to operate the gates at a level crossing and to provide a visual inspection of trains as they passed his location.

In this aerial view of the Sarajevo train station from 2011, we can see the tracks leading into the station platforms as well as the stop for the Sarajevo Tramway (one of the oldest tram systems in Europe) at the station and the city skyline in the distance.

This line was restored to operation in 2010 and 2011, and the roof-riding appears in the railway's tourism advertising.

Week 50: December 10 - December 16

The entirety of Union Pacific #18, a gas turbine-electric locomotive (GTEL) that is now preserved at Illinois Railway Museum, may best be seen in a panorama image. This locomotive was one of thirty developed in the mid-1950s as the third generation of Union Pacific GTELs.

Week 51: December 17 - December 23
