Week 52, 2010: January 1 - January 2

Two locomotive maintenance workers for Deutsche Reichsbahn in the former East Germany are installing a thermometer probe in a locomotive's smokebox in 1955. The temperature readings will help determine the locomotive's fuel efficiency.

Week 1: January 3 - January 9

Trains of the Yallourn 900mm Railway pulled by electric locomotives pass under the overburden dredge on the former 900 mm (2 ft 11+7⁄16 in) gauge railway in the open cut coal mine at Yallourn, Victoria, Australia. The trains used the two inner rails of the purpose built four-rail track while the dredge used the outer rails.

Week 3: January 17 - January 23

Week 4: January 24 - January 30

British Rail class 55 "Deltic" locomotive 55008 The Green Howards passes Peterborough with a Kings Cross-Newcastle working in July 1974 while other diesel locomotives look on from the stabling point. One of 55008's cabs has been preserved as the basis for a locomotive simulator.

Railway construction workers pause for a photograph in Afghanistan in May 2010. This new railway line from Termez to Mazar-i-Sharif will be 75 kilometres (47 mi) long.

Week 6: February 7 - February 13

The Albury Mail train uses the viaduct in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia, circa 1900 during the reconstruction of the viaduct from a wooden to a steel structure.

Week 7: February 14 - February 20

Amtrak's ex-Pennsylvania Railroad Wilmington Shops in Delaware for electric locomotive heavy maintenance in the early 1970s. Visible are a large number of GG1 locomotives, as well as an AEM-7 (number x995) and (further to the rear) an E60.

Week 9: February 28 - March 6

This view of the atrium section of Antwerpen-Centraal railway station in Belgium from 2006 shows tracks on three levels. The lower levels allow Thalys, HSL 4 and HSL-Zuid high-speed trains to travel through the station without the need to turn around.

A Norges Statsbaner Di 4 with the daytime train from Bodø to Trondheim (traveling on the Nordlandsbanen), passes the Saltfjellet between Lønsdal and Bolna in 2009.

Week 14: April 4 - April 10

Mad Bess, a 2-4-0 saddle tank tender locomotive built by the Ruislip Lido Railway Society between 1986 and 1998, is ready to take a train out on the 12 in (305 mm) gauge Ruislip Lido Railway in Ruislip, England, in 2008.

The world's first AC locomotive, powered by 3 phase AC at 3600 V, is posed for a photograph in 1902. The locomotive was designed by Kálmán Kandó in Ganz Company, Hungary, and used on Valtellina railway in Italy.

A passenger train pulled by a steam locomotive crosses a bridge on the 1,050 mm (3 ft 5+11⁄32 in) gauge Hejaz Railway in Jordan in 2007.

A former Norwegian State Railways Di 3 locomotive, now Kosovo Railways number 005, pulls the intercity train 892 (which includes a red and yellow Macedonian coach) just after Gurëz.

Week 33: August 15 - August 21

A special charter train pulled by SNCB/NMBS 5307 and 202.020 (CFL 1602) crosses a bridge on line 42, Rivage - Gouvy, in Roanne-Coo, Wallonia, Belgium in 2004. The bridge is 186 metres (610 ft) long, 23 metres (75 ft) high and was opened in 1885.

Week 34: August 22 - August 28

The ex-County Donegal Railways diesel cars Nos. 19 and 20 cross Glen Wyllin viaduct on the Manx Northern Railway, the second common carrier railway built in the Isle of Man, with a service to Ramsey in August 1964.

Week 35: August 29 - September 4

Multiple bogies are rolled away from underneath a passenger car in Mongolia as the car is regauged from Russian 1,520 mm (4 ft 11+27⁄32 in) gauge to Chinese 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) gauge in 2005.

Week 36: September 5 - September 11

An ONCF DF 100 class diesel locomotive (closely related to SNCF class 72000) pulls a train from Nador at the junction where the lines from Nador and from Taza meet, a few kilometers away from Taourirt, Morocco, in 2010.

Week 37: September 12 - September 18

Cars are transferred on an incline on the 610 mm (2 ft) gauge phosphate railway in Nauru in 1908.

Week 38: September 19 - September 25

Week 39: September 26 - October 2

Construction work proceeds in 1873 on the first Parnell Tunnel, which will pass under Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand. A new, larger tunnel was subsequently built at a lower gradient and opened in 1915.

Week 40: October 3 - October 9

A charter train is about to depart from Shahgai in 1993, with a Pakistan Railways HGS 2-8-0 at front and rear, and descend out of the Khyber Pass back to Jamrud, near Peshawar. The local tribesmen are asserting their right to free travel on the trains, a condition of the railway being built through their land.

Week 41: October 10 - October 16

The PeruRail train from Cusco to Lake Titicaca stops at La Raya, the highest point on its journey at 4,321 metres (14,177 ft) above sea level.

Week 42: October 17 - October 23

A Pt47 class steam locomotive rides the turntable at Wolsztyn, Poland, in 2005 with other steam locomotives visible in the roundhouse behind it. Wolsztyn is the last place in Europe to supply steam locomotives for regular, timetabled train services on PKP, the national railway network of Poland.

London Midland and Scottish Railway Stanier 5P5F 4-6-0 'Black Five' class locomotive number 5000 stands inside Northwich Motive Power Depot on 23 October 1982 after running light from Chester.

Week 44: October 31 - November 6

The tines of a ballast tamper operated by Neopul in Portugal are worn from frequent use. The tines are lowered to surround the sleepers and then vibrate to force the ballast against the sleeper and hold it in place.

Week 45: November 7 - November 13

A rubber-tyred multiple unit train leaves Jiantan Station on the Taipei Metro, Taiwan, in 2007. The architecture of the station was designed to resemble a dragon boat; the station was awarded the 19th Annual Taiwan Architecture Award in 1997.

Week 46: November 14 - November 20

A Finnish railway modeller operates a hand-crafted, coal-fired, 1:8 scale 2-10-0 'live steam' locomotive in 7+1⁄4 in (184 mm) gauge, that he built in 14,000 hours over a period of 15 years.

Week 47: November 21 - November 27

A passenger train stops at the Brazzaville station on the Congo-Ocean Railway in 1932. It has been estimated that 17,000 of the construction workers, who were mainly recruited from what is now southern Chad and the Central African Republic, died during the construction of the railway, which was completed in 1934

Week 48: November 28 - December 4

The Anghel Saligny Bridge, originally built in the 1890s to cross the Danube and Borcea branch of the Danube and known as the King Carol I Bridge, was depicted on a Romanian postage stamp in 1972. The bridge was opened in 1895 with a convoy of 15 whistling locomotives crossing it at 60 km/h (37 mph), followed by a train reserved for 'guests', at 80 km/h (50 mph).

Week 49: December 5 - December 11

A VL20 class electric locomotive pulls a freight train on the South-Ural Iron Road line, Kisegatch, Russia, in 2006.

Week 50: December 12 - December 18

A Serbian Railways class 412 diesel multiple unit train is undergoing service in one of the company's maintenance sheds. Serbian Railways traces its beginning to August 23, 1884, when the first train departed from Belgrade for Niš.

A Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft class ET 165 electric multiple unit, originally built in the late 1920s, of which many units were transferred to PKP class EW90, was preserved and is periodically used on the Berlin S-Bahn as the Christmas Train.

Week 52: December 26 - January 1, 2012
