The Okuoi Rainbow Bridge on the Ōigawa Railway Ikawa Line in Japan is part of a deviation of the Ikawa line opened in 1990 after the completion of the Nagashima Dam. The Okuoi Rainbow Bridge traverses the waters behind the dam wall and crosses over the former route of the Ikawa line which now lies submerged beneath them.

A pair of Russian 2TE10U class diesel locomotives operating in 2007. A total of 549 of this class of locomotive were built between 1989 and 1996. They can achieve speeds up to 120 kilometres per hour (75 mph) and are equipped with braking systems appropriate for passenger train service.

A SBB Cargo Ae 6/6 electric locomotive hauls a freight train over the Eglisau rail bridge across the Rhine river in northern Switzerland. By mid-2008, SBB Cargo had about 10,500 freight wagons and 466 main-line locomotives in service, alongside 215 shunting locomotives and tractors.

Walschaerts valve gear in a steam locomotive. In this animation, the red colour represents live steam entering the cylinder, blue represents expanded (spent) steam being exhausted from the cylinder. Note that the cylinder receives two steam injections during each full rotation; the same occurs in the cylinder on the other side of the engine.

A Central Japan Railway Company 211-5000 series electric multiple unit train passes the Seiken-ji Temple on the Tōkaidō Main Line between Okitsu and Shimizu stations. The Tōkaidō Main Line, connecting Tōkyō and Kōbe stations, was relegated to a secondary role for local trains after the opening of high-speed Tōkaidō Shinkansen line in 1964, and today other than certain overnight services there are no passenger trains that run the full length of the old line.

Prior to working on the track, work crews strapped torpedoes like this to the rail using the soft, lead straps. This device was strapped to the rail about 0.25 to 0.5 miles (0.40 to 0.80 km) from the work site. They would be placed in a pattern so that when an oncoming train ran over the torpedoes, the train crew would hear a bam...then bam, bam, or some pattern like that to alert them to the work crew ahead. The bang was so loud that the work crew could hear it too, alerting them to a train approaching. Once the track work was done for the day, the track crew removed the torpedoes prior to leaving the work site.
