Week 3: January 18 - January 24

The Okuoi Rainbow Bridge on the Ōigawa Railway Ikawa Line in Japan is part of a deviation of the Ikawa line opened in 1990 after the completion of the Nagashima Dam. The Okuoi Rainbow Bridge traverses the waters behind the dam wall and crosses over the former route of the Ikawa line which now lies submerged beneath them.

Week 4: January 25 - January 31

Incheon International Airport station on South Korea's new AREX rail line linking the airport to Gimpo Airport, seen here when the line opened in 2007. A further extension to Seoul is currently under construction and expected to open in late 2010.

Week 5: February 1 - February 7

Week 6: February 8 - February 14

A pair of Russian 2TE10U class diesel locomotives operating in 2007. A total of 549 of this class of locomotive were built between 1989 and 1996. They can achieve speeds up to 120 kilometres per hour (75 mph) and are equipped with braking systems appropriate for passenger train service.

Week 7: February 15 - February 21

A SBB Cargo Ae 6/6 electric locomotive hauls a freight train over the Eglisau rail bridge across the Rhine river in northern Switzerland. By mid-2008, SBB Cargo had about 10,500 freight wagons and 466 main-line locomotives in service, alongside 215 shunting locomotives and tractors.

Walschaerts valve gear in a steam locomotive. In this animation, the red colour represents live steam entering the cylinder, blue represents expanded (spent) steam being exhausted from the cylinder. Note that the cylinder receives two steam injections during each full rotation; the same occurs in the cylinder on the other side of the engine.

Week 9: March 1 - March 7

A Central Japan Railway Company 211-5000 series electric multiple unit train passes the Seiken-ji Temple on the Tōkaidō Main Line between Okitsu and Shimizu stations. The Tōkaidō Main Line, connecting Tōkyō and Kōbe stations, was relegated to a secondary role for local trains after the opening of high-speed Tōkaidō Shinkansen line in 1964, and today other than certain overnight services there are no passenger trains that run the full length of the old line.

Week 10: March 8 - March 14

Week 11: March 15 - March 21

A pair of commuter trains operated by Deutsche Bahn navigate the complex track arrangement at Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof, Germany, in 2007.

Week 12: March 22 - March 28

Egyptian dignitaries, including then Prime Minister Adli Yakan Pasha and former Prime Minister Hussein Rushdi Pasha, take part in the opening ceremonies of the Luxor-Aswan rail line in 1926. The line is now part of the Egyptian National Railways network.

Russian VL80^S class electric locomotive number VL80^S-1891 waits through the night for its next duty in Rostov-on-Don.

Week 14: April 5 - April 11

Prior to working on the track, work crews strapped torpedoes like this to the rail using the soft, lead straps. This device was strapped to the rail about 0.25 to 0.5 miles (0.40 to 0.80 km) from the work site. They would be placed in a pattern so that when an oncoming train ran over the torpedoes, the train crew would hear a bam...then bam, bam, or some pattern like that to alert them to the work crew ahead. The bang was so loud that the work crew could hear it too, alerting them to a train approaching. Once the track work was done for the day, the track crew removed the torpedoes prior to leaving the work site.

A standard gauge train arrives at Langrune station in France circa 1900. The Rio Grande Zephyr is prepared for departure from Denver Union Station in April 1983, shortly before the service, the last privately-operated intercity passenger train in the United States, was discontinued.

Week 21: May 24 - May 30

The impressionist painting "Arrival of a Train" depicting trains at Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris, France, was painted by Claude Monet in 1877. Monet rented a studio next to the station and completed 11 paintings of the station and its activities.

Week 22: May 31 - June 6

In 1914, the Underground Electric Railways Company of London advertised the opening of the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway extension to Embankment tube station. This detail from the poster shows a cross-section of the land under Charing Cross railway station including the new tube line and other tube lines already serving the station.

Preserved Deutsche Reichsbahn Class 99.77-79 locomotive number 97 785, built in the 1950s, is being readied for service on the Fichtelberg Railway at Cranzahl in 2003.

German steam locomotive on a postage stamp

The profile of a Deutsche Bundesbahn Class 10 steam locomotive was featured on this postage stamp from Germany in 1975. Locomotives of this class were nicknamed 'Black Swans' ('schwarze Schwäne') as a result of their elegant shape.

Week 30: July 26 - August 1

A mix of hired and El Zorro railway locomotives leads a broad gauge grain service in 2008. El Zorro is a railway operator based in Victoria, Australia; the company was founded in 1999, based in Spotswood, and named by director Ray Evans who has a taste for things Spanish.

Week 31: August 2 - August 8

Scientific American used this drawing in 1895 to show how Baltimore and Ohio Railroad used electric locomotives on trains through tunnels on the Baltimore Belt Line, built circa 1890. The line was the first mainline railroad electrification in the United States.

A Gautrain Electrostar set undergoes maintenance inside the Midrand depot. The Gautrain service is operated in Gauteng Province, South Africa, which links Johannesburg, Pretoria, and OR Tambo International Airport, opening to the public on 8 June 2010, in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

One steam locomotive rests atop another that is almost completely upside down in the aftermath of a head-on collision between the two. This accident occurred on the Bay of Quinte Railway in Ontario, Canada, in 1892.

The first Illinois Tunnel Company train at the Milwaukee Road freight house

On July 7, 1905, the first revenue train operated on the 2 ft (610 mm) gauge Illinois Tunnel Company railway in Chicago when an 11-car train was dispatched from the Erie Railroad freight house. The 5 cars seen here were delivered to the Milwaukee Road freight house. The elevator in the foreground goes down to the tunnel.

Week 42: October 18 - October 24

An LEW-type EL 3 electric locomotive is at the lead of a train of ore cars being loaded in an open-pit mine in Germany in 1982. Note that the locomotive has three pantographs at different angles so the overhead wire can be strung to prevent other mine equipment or loads from touching it.

A three-cylinder 4-6-2 steam locomotive in operation on the island of Java. The end of the third cylinder is just visible beneath the locomotive's smokebox.

Week 51: December 20 - December 26

The bridge at Keddie Wye in California's Feather River canyon was originally built by Western Pacific Railroad in 1909. The route is still in use by its current owner, Union Pacific Railroad, and via trackage rights by BNSF Railway.
