- 1808 – Johann Andreas Schubert (pictured), builder of the first German steam locomotive, Saxonia, is born in Wernesgrün (d. 1870).
- 1845 – Boston and Maine Railroad Extension, which was incorporated a dispute with the Boston and Lowell Railroad over trackage rights rates in Massachusetts, is merged into Boston and Maine Railroad.
- 1944 – The last steam locomotive purchased new by Southern Pacific Railroad, cab forward class AC-12 4-8-8-2 number 4294, enters service.[1]
- 1949 – Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and Western Pacific Railroad jointly inaugurate the California Zephyr passenger train between Chicago, Illinois, and San Francisco, California.
