[edit]- 1831 – The John Bull, the oldest surviving operable steam locomotive, departs Liverpool aboard the steamship Allegheny bound for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- 1877 – Workers on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad walk off their jobs in an act that is seen as the start of the great railroad strike of 1877.[1]
- 1887 – The second Tay Rail Bridge across the Firth of Tay in Scotland opens.
- 1891 – Tamashima Station, now known as Shin-Kurashiki Station in Kurashiki, Okayama, Japan, is opened.
20th century
[edit]- 1908 – Shinpei Goto steps down as president of the South Manchuria Railway.
- 1911 – The Santa Maria Valley Railway is incorporated in Los Angeles, California.
- 1921 – In an effort to consolidate maintenance and simplify operations, Grand Trunk Railway and Canadian Northern Ontario Railway open a 0.35 miles (0.56 km) connection in Lyn, Ontario.[2]
- 1943 – Canadian National Railway opens Central Station in Montreal.[3]
- 1959 – Pennsylvania Railroad operates its last steam locomotive hauled train in regular service.[1]
- 2000 – The United States Surface Transportation Board's temporary moratorium on railroad mergers is upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit; the ruling contributes to the failure of the proposed BNSF/CN merger.[4]
21st century
[edit]- 2004 – Canadian National Railway completes its purchase of BC Rail.
- 2005 – Russian military civil engineers test a new pontoon bridge for railroad use across the Volga River.[5]
- 2006 – The New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter train begins service in the Albuquerque metro area.
