[edit]- 1862 – The Glastonbury to Templecombe section of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway opens to public traffic.
- 1881 – The Seney Syndicate meets at Seney's New York bank and organizes the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company (which would later become the Nickel Plate Road).
20th century
[edit]- 1995 – The Canadian National Railway sells the former Central Vermont Railway lines in New York and Vermont to RailTex, forming the basis for the New England Central Railroad.[1]
21st century
[edit]- 2004 – The first freight train travels the entire north-south transcontinental railroad in Australia between Adelaide, South Australia, and Darwin, Northern Territory.
- 2015 – The Valhalla train crash, in which a train on Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line struck a vehicle at a level crossing in Valhalla, New York, kills six people and injures 15.[2][3]

[edit]- 1809 – Thomas Swann, president of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad 1847-1853, is born (d. 1883).
- 1843 – William Cornelius Van Horne, who oversaw the major construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and who became the youngest superintendent of the Illinois Central Railroad, is born (d. 1915).
- 1853 – Samuel Morse Felton, Jr., president of Chicago and Alton Railroad 1899-1908, Chicago Great Western Railway 1909-1925 (d. 1930).
- 1930 – Charles S. Roberts, American railroad historian, is born (d. 2010).[4][5][6]
