[edit]- 1857 – George S. Griggs is awarded U.S. patent 18,883 for a steam locomotive fire arch developed by Matthew Baird.

- 1940 – The local tracks on New York City Subway's IND Sixth Avenue Line are opened.
- 1972 – Amtrak introduces the Vacationer passenger train service between New York City and Miami, Florida.
