- 1927 – A strong tornado of at least F3 (probably F4) intensity devastated more than 200 city blocks in St. Louis, Missouri and crossed into Illinois, killing 79 people and injuring 550. Damage totaled $53 million (equivalent to $930 million in 2023).
- 1938 – Five tornadoes struck the Charleston, South Carolina area with two F2 tornadoes killing a total of 32 people and injuring 100. The deadlier of the two crossed James Island and the Ashley River, killing 27. Many were crushed as buildings collapsed. The other killed five as it destroyed poorly-built homes in Charleston. Three other tornadoes from this event were rated F1.
