September 1
- 2021 – Several strong tornadoes spawned by the remnants of Hurricane Ida hit the Mid-Atlantic States. An EF2 tornado moved through the northern suburbs of Philadelphia, killing one person in Upper Dublin and injuring two. An EF3 tornado destroyed several homes in Mullica Hill, New Jersey, injuring two people.
September 2
- 1947 – An F3 tornado moved along the road between Burgettstown and Eldersville, Pennsylvania, killing 2 people and injuring 20. Debris from one home was carried 4 miles (6.4 km). An F2 tornado killed one person in Brockton, Massachusetts.
- 2002 – A small tornado outbreak hit Wisconsin. An F3 tornado tore through downtown Ladysmith, destroying 40 buildings and injuring 27 people. Damaged totaled $25 million. A poorly-anchored church was swept away. One other person was injured by an F1 tornado near Wausau. An F2 tornado caused $3.9 million in damage in Gilman.
September 3
- 1993 – A small tornado outbreak hit the Northeastern United States. An F1 tornado near Batavia, New York threw a delivery van into an oncoming tractor trailer, killing the drivers of both vehicles.
- 1980 – Several tornadoes touched down in the Upper Midwest and Arkansas. An F3 skipped across St. Cloud, Minnesota. One person was killed and 15 were injured, all in one trailer park where 13 mobile homes were destroyed. The tornado destroyed 6 homes, 14 trailers, and 16 apartments in another section of town.
September 4
- 1941 – An F2 tornado moved across Minneapolis to Gervais Lake, killing 4 people and injuring 50. About 200 freight cars, some weighing 80,000 pounds (36,000 kg), were overturned.
- 1948 – An F2 tornado, described as a "giant ice cream cone," hit Havana, Florida, killing two children.
September 5
- 1935 – The 1935 Labor Day hurricane spawned tornadoes in the Southeastern United States. An F3 tornado killed two people in Hampden Sydney and Farmville, Virginia. An F2 tornado killed a person near Clinton, North Carolina
- 1979 – Tornadoes spawned by Hurricane David touched down across the Mid-Atlantic States. An F3 tornado hit Great Falls and Fairfax, Virginia, killing one person and causing extensive damage to Woodson High School. An F2 tornado killed a man in New Garden Township, Pennsylvania.
- 2020 – A pyrocumulonimbus produced by the Creek Fire spawned two intense firewhirls, recorded as tornadoes, which caused extensive tree damage in the Sierra Nevada of California. The strongest, rated EF2, struck north of Mammoth Pool Reservoir while an EF1 tornado touched down north of Huntington Lake.
September 6
- 1898 – A tornado outbreak resulted in four deaths across parts of New York and Pennsylvania. An F2 tornado killed two people in Springfield Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. One man died in his barn along with all 14 of his cattle. An F3 tornado killed one person and injured a family of five near Phelps, New York. Another person was killed by an F2 tornado in Masonville, New York.
September 7
- 1893 – An F3 tornado, spawned by a hurricane, destroyed homes and stuck a convent in Lockport, Louisiana, killing four people. Another F3 tornado killed three people as it passed near East Troy, Powell, and Franklindale, Pennsylvania.
- 2009 – A significant tornado outbreak struck Argentina and Brazil. A tornado in the Misiones Province killed 11 people and injured 50 as it passed near Tobuna and San Pedro. Another tornado killed 4 people and injured 138 in Guaraciaba, Brazil.
September 8
- 1885 – A tornado outbreak resulted in at least seven deaths in Ohio. An F3 tornado damaged or destroyed about 300 buildings in Washington Court House, killing 6 people and injuring 120. Evidence from detailed studies indicates that a suction vortex moved within the main circulation, a phenomenon that was not proven until the 1970s. Another F3 tornado killed at least one person in Pike Township..
September 9
- 1821 – An outbreak of at least five tornadoes killed eight people in New England. One tornado crossed Lake Sunapee, forming a "terrific pyramidal column," and passed near Warner, New Hampshire, killing six people. Another tornado killed two people as it moved through Warwick and Orange, Massachusetts with debris carried up to 30 miles (48 km).
September 10
- 1811 – A tornado spawned by a hurricane hit Charleston, South Carolina, severely damaging or destroying 60 homes and killing 11 people.
- 1882 – A hurricane spawned five tornadoes as it made landfall in the Florida Panhandle. An F2 tornado killed five people in tenant homes near Quincy. Another "pear-shaped" F2 tornado killed one person in Darbyville.
September 11
- 1970 – A devastating F4 tornado hit Venice, Italy, killing 34 people and injuring 174, including 21 people who drowned when a vaporetto capsized.
September 12
- 1961 – An F4 tornado spawned by Hurricane Carla began as a waterspout and tore through Galveston, Texas, killing eight people. Homes may have been weakened by hurricane winds. This was one of only two hurricane-spawned F4 tornadoes on record (the other was produced by Hurricane Hilda in 1964). No recorded hurricane has produced an F5 or EF5 tornado. An F3 tornado killed five people in Hodge, Louisiana.
September 13
- 1892 – A small tornado outbreak associated with a tropical storm hit the Carolinas. An F2 tornado killed a prison guard and injured 15 prisoners near Halifax, North Carolina.
September 14
- 1928 – Part of a two-day tornado outbreak, an F4 tornado killed 14 people and injured 100 in and near Rockford, Illinois. Most of the deaths and damage were in a chair factory, which partially collapsed after its roof was torn off.
September 15
- 1912 – An F2 tornado struck a resort on Onondaga Lake and passed just north of Syracuse, New York, killing 3 people and injuring 40. Most of the deaths and injuries occurred when the tornado overturned a trolley.
- 2004 – The first day of the Hurricane Ivan tornado outbreak brought 26 tornadoes to the Southeastern United States. An F2 tornado killed four people in Macedonia near Blountstown, Florida. Two other people were killed by two F1 tornadoes in Bay County, Florida. The outbreak continued into the early morning of September 18, producing 120 tornadoes, the most on record from a single tropical cyclone.
September 16
- 1888 – An F2 tornado moved through downtown Washington D.C. and dissipated near Capitol Hill.
- 1978 – An F3 tornado killed six people as it moved across rural land near Melbourne and Grinnell, Iowa. Many farms were destroyed. Four people died in a business area south of Grinnell.
- 2010 – A tornado outbreak brought two tornadoes to New York City. An EF0 tornado downed trees in Brooklyn and an EF1 tornado killed a person in Queens when it brought a tree down on her car. Tornadoes affected several other northeastern states. An EF3 tornado killed one person in Belleville, West Virginia.
September 17
- 1988 – Tornadoes associated with Hurricane Gilbert touched down across Texas. Three tornadoes hit San Antonio. An F1 tornado destroyed homes and trailers on the south side of the city, killing one person. Six other people were injured by the other two tornadoes. An F2 tornado caused significant damage in Del Rio, injuring two people.
September 18
- 1997 – A small tornado outbreak hit central Minnesota. An F3 tornado killed one person and severely injured another south of Mille Lacs Lake.
- 2006 – A tornado hit Nobeoka, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, killing three people and injuring 100. A train was derailed and 1,800 buildings were damaged. This was the deadliest tornado in Japan since 1941, but was surpassed when another tornado killed nine people on November 7.
- 2022 — A small and intense tornado outbreak impacted Ukraine and Russia, killing three people and injuries eight others. Hundreds of structures were damaged or destroyed from the tornadoes.
September 19
- 1924 – An F2 tornado skipped across Hot Springs, Arkansas, destroying a large church where one person was killed. Another person was injured.
- 1947 – An F3 tornado spawned by the 1947 Fort Lauderdale hurricane destroyed 27 homes in Apalachicola, Florida, killing 2 people and injuring 100.
September 20
- 1845 – A tornado outbreak hit parts of New York and Vermont. A large tornado, up to 1.5 miles (2.4 km) wide, destroyed many homes and at least 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) of forest as it passed near Antwerp, Fowler, and Edwards, New York. It, and other members of the tornado family became known as the "Great Adirondack Tornado." Another tornado temporarily drained the mouth of the Genesee River as it moved onto Lake Ontario. There were no deaths reported from this outbreak, but a child was reported missing.
- 1967 – Hurricane Beulah made landfall near Brownsville, Texas and spawned 115 tornadoes over several days, the most produced by any tropical cyclone until Hurricane Ivan in 2004. An F3 tornado destroyed homes on the northern edge of Palacios, Texas, killing four people. An F2 tornado killed one person near Louise, Texas.
- 2000 – An F4 tornado struck Xenia, Ohio, damaging or destroying 250 homes and 40 businesses, killing 1 person, and injuring 100. This storm damaged some of the same areas previously struck by an F5 tornado during the 1974 Super Outbreak.
September 21
- 1894 – A major tornado outbreak resulted in at least 63 deaths across Iowa and Minnesota. An F4 tornado or tornado family leveled farms in Kossuth, Hancock, Cerro Gordo, and Worth Counties, Iowa, killing 25 people. Another F4 tornado or family tracked from near Mason City, Iowa through Le Roy, and Spring Valley, Minnesota, killing 16 more. Another tornado family, with members of to F5 intensity moved from near Whittemore, Iowa to near Kiester, Minnesota, killing at least 14 people. Five farms in Kossuth county were destroyed with little trace left behind.
- 1924 – A major tornado outbreak killed 34 people in Wisconsin. A tornado or tornado family of at least F4 (probably F5) intensity killed 18 people in Taylor and Clark Counties. Farms were completely obliterated near Rib Lake. An F4 tornado killed seven people near Sanborn, including five in one home.
September 22
- 1810 – A T4 (F2) tornado in Fernhill Heath, Worcestershire, England varied between 0.5–1.0 mile (0.80–1.61 km) wide, making it possibly the largest tornado on record in the United Kingdom.
- 2000 – Tornadoes associated with Tropical Storm Helene touched down across Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. All were weak (F0–F1) except for an F2 tornado that struck Martin, South Carolina, killing one person and injuring five.
September 23
- 1555 – A T7 (F3) tornado, originating as a waterspout, came a shore at the Grand Harbour in Malta, destroying an armada that was preparing for battle and killing approximately 600 people. Some sources list the year as 1551.
- 1903 – A tornado struck an elementary school in Yodobashi, Tokyo Prefecture, Japan, killing 10 people and injuring 14.
September 24
- 1900 – An F3 tornado struck in or near Morristown, Minnesota. Seven people, out of a group of twelve, died when the Saloon where they took shelter collapsed. One other person was killed in a barn.
- 2001 – A tornado outbreak hit the Eastern United States. A destructive F3 tornado moved through Maryland suburbs of Washington D.C. including Beltsville and Laurel, and caused major damage to the University of Maryland campus. Two people were killed as a direct result of the tornado and 55 were injured. Another person died of a heart attack. The same storm spawned a weak tornado that caused minor damage in Washington and moved across the National Mall, lifting near the Capitol Building. An F4 tornado leveled a house near Rixeyville, Virginia and struck Jeffersonton.
- 2005 – Hurricane Rita made landfall in southwestern Louisiana, spawning tornadoes in much of the Deep South. An F3 tornado caused damage in Clayton, Louisiana, and passed near Waterproof. An F1 tornado killed one person and seriously injured two near Inverness, Mississippi when it flipped and destroyed a mobile home.
September 25
- 1930 – A tornado outbreak affected parts of the Midwestern United States. Twin F2 unroofed all seven homes in Summitville near Keokuk, Iowa and destroyed a home and a barn, killing two people. An F3 (near F4) tornado leveled homes near Metz and Rich Hill, Missouri, killing two more people.
- 1973 – An outbreak brought strong tornadoes to Kansas and Nebraska. An F3 tornado (listed as two tornadoes by Thomas P. Grazulis) hit Salina, Kansas, destroying homes and a trailer park, and killed one person in Niles, where several more homes were destroyed. Another F3 tornado struck Clay Center, Kansas, killing two people, injuring 28, and damaging 250 homes. A tornado family hit Linn and Hanover, Kansas and ended in Nebraska. This event is officially rated F3, but was rated F4 by Grazulis, with near-F5 damage near Blue Springs, Nebraska.
September 26
- 1881 – A tornado destroyed an elementary school in Miyazaki, Japan, killing 16 people.
- 1898 – A tornado family with members up to F3 intensity hit St. Catharines and Merritton, Ontario, killing at least six people. It crossed the Niagara River at Grand Island. A later member of the tornado family injured eight people in Tonawanda, New York.
- 1951 – Three strong tornadoes touched down in Wisconsin and Michigan. An F4 (near-F5) tornado swept away farms near Waupaca, Wisconsin. An entire family of five was killed; they were caught unawares as they worked on the northeast side of their house while the storm approached from the southwest. One other person died near Sugar Bush. Another F4 tornado killed a farmhand near Cambria, Wisconsin. One other person died in an F2 tornado north of Bitely, Michigan.
September 27
- 2004 – Hurricane Jeanne spawned tornadoes across the Carolinas and Georgia. An F2 tornado destroyed five mobile homes north of Ridgeway, South Carolina, killing one person and injuring thirteen. An F1 tornado injured four people near Alcolu, South Carolina.
September 28
- 1884 – An F3 tornado, described as "a monster top boring over the earth's surface" destroyed homes, businesses, a church, and a bridge in Alton, Pennsylvania north of Bradford. Twelve people were injured. An F3 tornado destroyed much of Shongo, New York (now called Willing), killing 3 people and injuring 30.
- 1923 – An F3 tornado destroyed small homes on the southeast side of Council Bluffs, Iowa, killing six people and injuring ten. A mother and her three sons were crushed by a tree.
- 1972 – An F4 tornado (rated F2 by Thomas P. Grazulis) hit North Chicago, Illinois, where it injured 20 people, most of them at the Great Lakes Naval Base.
September 29
- 1927 – A strong tornado of at least F3 (probably F4) intensity devastated more than 200 city blocks in St. Louis, Missouri and crossed into Illinois, killing 79 people and injuring 550. Damage totaled $53 million (equivalent to $930 million in 2023).
- 1938 – Five tornadoes struck the Charleston, South Carolina area with two F2 tornadoes killing a total of 32 people and injuring 100. The deadlier of the two crossed James Island and the Ashley River, killing 27. Many were crushed as buildings collapsed. The other killed five as it destroyed poorly-built homes in Charleston. Three other tornadoes from this event were rated F1.
September 30
- 1959 – Hurricane Gracie spawned several tornadoes in Virginia and South Carolina. An F3 tornado destroyed a duplex in Crozet, Virginia, killing ten of the eleven people inside. One person was killed in another home, and four other people were injured. Another F3 tornado destroyed small buildings and the elementary school in Stanardsville, Virginia, killing one person and injuring nine.
