- 1 April 2005: Paul Bomani, former Tanzanian politician and ambassador to the United States and Mexico, died at the age of 80.
- 2 April 1885: The German East Africa Company was formed by Karl Peters to govern German East Africa.
- 6 April 1861: Zanzibar and Oman were split into two separate principalities with Majid bin Said becoming the first Sultan of Zanzibar.
- 11 April 1972: Following the assassination of Abeid Karume, Aboud Jumbe became the second President of Zanzibar and Vice President of Tanzania.
- 11 April 1979: The Uganda-Tanzania War ended.
- 26 April 1964: The Republic of Tanganyika and the Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba united to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
