- 1839: The Winchester to Southampton and Winchfield to Basingstoke stretches of the London and South Western Railway opened.
- 1913: Biochemist Edward Abraham, instrumental in the development of Penicillin, was born in Southampton.
- 1990: An improperly installed panel of the windscreen of British Airways Flight 5390 failed at 17,400 feet (5,300 m) over Didcot, blowing the plane's captain partially out of the aircraft. The plane landed safely at Southampton Airport.
