- August 22: A stolen gun belonging to Elvis Presley has been found in a portable toilet. The gun was stolen from a Memphis museum.[2]
- August 15: Opera singer Pavarotti is to remain in hospital in Italy, despite being given the all-clear by doctors. The tenor had been admitted to hospital the previous week after suffering from a fever.[3]

- August 3: Rapper Eminem is suing Apple for allegedly selling his music in its iTunes Store without his permission.[5]
- August 1: Internationally celebrated Irish folk musician Tommy Makem has died at the age of 74. He was also an artist, poet and storyteller, best known as a member of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem.[6]
