- 1929 – Southern Railways closes the Merton Abbey branch to passengers.
- 1943 – A crush in the staircase entrance to Bethnal Green Underground station kills 173 as they are entering an air raid shelter.

- 1976 – An IRA bomb explodes on an empty train at Cannon Street station injuring eight on another train.

- 1665 – British naval ship London is destroyed with 300 killed when the powder magazine explodes in the Thames Estuary on its way to the capital.
- 1969 – Victoria line services commence between Warren Street and Victoria.
