- 1840 – Bishopsgate station opens as the London terminus of the Eastern Counties Railway.
- 1862 – Eastern Counties Railway absorbed by the Great Eastern Railway.
- 1863 – London and South Western Railway opens line from Twickenham to Kingston.
- 1863 – London, Chatham and Dover Railway extends from Herne Hill to Beckenham Junction.
- 1864 – Metropolitan Railway and Great Western Railway open branch from Latimer Road Junction to West London Railway and start services to Kensington.
- 1879 – District Railway extends from Turnham Green to Ealing Broadway.
- 1891 – Metropolitan Railway takes over the Aylesbury and Buckingham Railway.
- 1892 – London, Chatham and Dover Railway opens line between Nunhead and Shortlands.
- 1900 – South Eastern and Chatham Railway extends Chipstead Valley Railway from Kingswood to Tadworth.
- 1913 – Metropolitan Railway takes over the Great Northern & City Railway.
- 1933 – The London Passenger Transport Board is created from a merger of the UERL, Metropolitan Railway and London's privately and municipally owned bus, tram and trolleybus companies.
