1600 - A Dutch ship carrying William Adams, the "Pilot of Miura" shipwrecks in Usuki Bay, Bungo Province (Traditional Japanese Date: Sixteenth Day of the Third Month, 1600)
1891 - Chūhachi Ninomiya succeeds in getting a model plane driven by a rubber band to fly.
1901 - Emperor Showa is born as prince Michi-no-miya Hirohito. He was the first son of Emperor Taishō who was crown prince at the time.
1912 - 276 die in a gas explosion in the Yūbari coal mine, Hokkaido.
1927 - 嵐勘寿郎主演の｢鞍馬天狗シリーズ｣の第1作となる「角兵衛獅子」が封切られる。
1949 - 日本五輪復帰をIOC承認
1977 - Yasuhiro Yamashita, aged 19, becomes the youngest ever to win the open category of the All-Japan Judo Championships.
1986 - 昭和天皇在位60年式典が行われる。法隆寺が全焼する。
