- 1941 - The Empire of Japan launches an aerial attack on Pearl Harbor, killing over 2,300 personnel. The event marked the start of the United States' involvement in World War II and prompted U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt to call December 7 "a date which will live in infamy".
