Rosie the Riveter has been an important cultural icon in the United States since World War II, when many women assisted the war effort by entering the workforce to perform jobs left behind by men enlisted in the armed forces. It was during World War II that women contributed significantly to factory and construction jobs—typically associated with men—across the United States.
