- Syrian rebels kill 28 soldiers in attacks on military checkpoints near the town of Saraqeb in northern Idlib province, hours after a wave of bombings hit Damascus and its outskirts, according to a report from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights; five rebels also died in gun battles following the attacks. - A prison officer is killed in an ambush by dissident Irish republicans as he drives to work along Northern Ireland's M1 motorway.
