1841 – The convict assignment system was abolished in New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land and was replaced by the probation gang system.
1851 – Victoria becomes a separate colony.
1932 – The Australian Broadcasting Commission is inaugurated by Prime Minister Joseph Lyons.
1949 – John Farnham, Australian singer is born.
1970 – Melbourne Airport is opened at Tullamarine, Victoria.
1975 – Medibank is introduced, Australia Post and Telecom are formed from the Postmaster-General's Department.
1978 – The Northern Territory becomes self-governing.
1983 – High Court blocks construction of the Franklin Dam in Tasmania in the Tasmanian Dams Case.
1986 – Fringe Benefits Tax is introduced.
1996 – The Northern Territory legalises voluntary euthanasia. It would be repealed by a conscience vote in the federal Parliament in 1997.
1997 – Deregulation of the Telecommunications market, allowing the entry of competitors other than Telstra and Optus.
2000 – A 10% Goods and Services Tax is introduced for most goods and services.

1858 – Possible birth date of King O'Malley, one of the more colourful characters of the early federal period of Australian political history. He claimed to have been born in Canada which would have made him a British subject, if he was born in Vermont, as was likely, he would have been ineligible for a seat in Australian parliament.
1974 – Birth date of Matthew Reilly, Australian thriller writer.

1797 – Following Aboriginal attacks on farms in the Hawkesbury region, Hunter dispatches a party of soldiers from the New South Wales Corps to protect settlers.
1947 – Sugar rationing ends following World War II.
1989 – The Fitzgerald Inquiry into possible illegal activities and associated police micsonduct in Queensland ends.
1994 – Death of Lew Hoad, Australian tennis player.

1969 – Three thousand protesters against the Vietnam War rally outside the US Consulate in Melbourne.
1975 – Juanita Nielsen disappears, allegedly kidnapped and murdered.
1986 – After 10 years in power, Neville Wran resigns as Premier of New South Wales and is replaced by Barrie Unsworth.
1991 – Chinese-Australian heart surgeon Victor Chang was murdered in Sydney.
2002 – American Steve Fossett completes his solo balloon navigation of the world landing in Durham Downs, Queensland.

1851 – James Esmond announces the discovery of gold at Clunes, Victoria leading to the start of the Victorian Gold Rush.
1854 – The Mercury was first published in Hobart.
1900 – The Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act (UK) passed it received royal assent on the 9th.
1905 – Alfred Deakin becomes Prime Minister of Australia for the second time.
1945 – John Curtin, Prime Minister of Australia, died while in office.
1980 – Evonne Goolagong defeats Chris Evert to win her second women's singles title.
1985 – Justice Lionel Murphy of the High Court is convicted of perverting the course of justice.
2001 – Australia and newly independent East Timor sign the Timor Gap Treaty.
2004 – Australia and Thailand sign a free trade agreement.

1904 – Street lights in Sydney are electrically lit.
1925 – Actress Ruth Cracknell born in Maitland, New South Wales.
1940 – The Story Bridge is opened in Brisbane
1942 – Elements of the Australian 9th Division arrive in El Alamein. The Division subsequently takes part in the First and Second Battle of El Alamein.
1945 – Frank Forde becomes the fifteenth Prime Minister of Australia.
1951 – Actor Geoffrey Rush is born in Toowoomba, Queensland.
1964 – Kevin Conway was killed in action, the first Australian battle casualty in the Vietnam War.

1826 – Charles Todd responsible for the Australian Overland Telegraph Line born.

1945 – The Australian 7th Division commences operations in the Battle of Balikpapan. Operations are completed by 21 July.
1960 – Eight-year-old Graeme Thorne is kidnapped and held for ransom after his parents win a lottery.
1975 – Footballer and Brownlow Medal winner, Michael Voss is born.
1986 – Brian Chambers and Kevin Barlow become the first westerners executed in Malaysia under strict new Asian drug-trafficking laws.
1991 – The Australian Republican Movement was formed amidst a growing debate about Australian republicanism.
2002 – The British Naval destroyer HMS Nottingham (D91) runs aground off Lord Howe Island.

1936 – The Federal Government announces an increase in military training strength, in response to the rise of fascism in Europe.

1991 – The first share offer for the newly privatised Commonwealth Bank.

1864 – Austin Chapman, Minister for Defence in the first Deakin Government, is born in Bong Bong, New South Wales.
1908 – John Armstrong, Minister in the Chifley Government and Lord Mayor of Sydney, is born in Ultimo, New South Wales.
1911 – King George V grants the title of Royal Australian Navy to Australia's naval forces.

1916 – Gough Whitlam, later Prime Minister of Australia, was born.
1974 – Sir John Kerr sworn in as Governor-General of Australia.
1979 – American space station Skylab crashes in Western Australia
1987 – The Bob Hawke-led Australian Labor Party returned to power after a double dissolution federal election.
1990 – Sarah MacDiarmid, age 23, disappears and likely murdered at Kananook railway station, Melbourne. The crime remains unsolved.

1855 – David Angus, founder of Angus & Robertson, born in Thurso, Scotland.
1866 – Frederick Augustus Bolles Peters, the founder of Peters Icecream, "The Health Food of a Nation" born in Scio, Michigan.
1957 – Larry Anthony, federal minister in the Menzies Government, dies in Murwillumbah, New South Wales. His son, Doug Anthony, is elected in a subsequent by-election as Member for the Division of Richmond.

1791 – Allan Cunningham, botanist and explorer, best known for discovering the Darling Downs is born in Wimbledon, London.
1945 – Ben Chifley becomes sixteenth Prime Minister of Australia.
1961 – Australian rules footballer, Tim Watson is born.
1997 – A crowd of over 100,000 people watch the Royal Canberra Hospital implosion. Twelve-year-old Katie Bender is killed instantly when debris from the site travels across Lake Burley Griffin.

1792 – The Home Secretary authorises Governor Phillip to make land grants to civil and military officers.
1874 – Crawford Vaughan, Premier of South Australia from 1915–1917, is born in Adelaide.
1995 – The Australian Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag are proclaimed as official Flags of Australia.
2001 – British backpacker, Peter Falconio disappears in the Australian outback. Bradley Murdoch is later found guilty of his murder.

1912 – The first branch of the Commonwealth Bank opens.
1940 – The Volunteer Defence Force, composed mainly of World War I veterans, was formed for home defence by the Returned Services League.
1977 – Anti-drugs campaigner Donald Mackay disappears near Griffith, presumed murdered.
1995 – The Queensland state election produces a hung Parliament, but with the support of Gladstone-based independent Liz Cunningham the coalition form the government in Queensland.

1800 – Reverends Richard Johnson and Samuel Marsden open a church school at Ryde.
1914 – Maurice Guillaux leaves Melbourne to fly to Sydney in a Blériot monoplane in the first delivery of airmail. He arrived in Sydney on 18 July after nine and a half hours of flying time.
1962 – Public funding of private schools becomes an issue following a strike by parents and the community who closed Catholic schools in Goulburn, New South Wales.
1986 – An explosion at Moura No. 4 mine in Moura, Queensland kills 12 people.

1902 – Indigenous Australian artist Albert Namatjira is born near Alice Springs.
1909 – The last sighting of the steamer Waratah sailing from Australia; disappeared off the coast of South Africa with 211 passengers and crew. The most famous ship to go down until the Titanic three years later.
1983 – New South Wales premier Neville Wran is exonerated by the Street Royal Commission over claims that he attempted to influence the NSW majestry.

1858 – The first game of Australian rules football is played between Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College.
1902 – Ninety-six men and boys were killed in a coal mine at Mount Kembla in New South Wales.
1911 – Thomas Denman, 3rd Baron Denman is appointed the fifth Governor General of Australia.
1956 – Actor Ernie Dingo is born in the Murchison region of Western Australia.
