• 1892 – Pioneer aviator Bert Hinkler is born in Bundaberg, Queensland.
• 1910 – Geelong, Victoria is declared a city.
• 1934 – Imperial Airways extends its airmail service to Australia.
• 1987 – Frank Vitkovic kills eight and injures another five before falling to his death in the Queen Street massacre in Melbourne.
• 1988 – In Mabo v Queensland (1988) the High Court of Australia finds that the Queensland Coast Islands Declaratory Act, which attempted to retrospectively abolish native title rights, was not valid.
