- December 27, 2009: The Indianapolis Colts, the last undefeated team in the 2009 NFL season, loses their first game of the year to the New York Jets. The Colts sat most of their starters after going ahead 15-10 in the third quarter, and the second team failed to hold off the Jets, who came back to win by a score of 29-15.
- December 19, 2009: For the fifth straight year, Mount Union faced Wisconsin–Whitewater in the 37th annual Stagg Bowl, the championship game of the NCAA Division III. Whitewater defeated Mount Union 38-28 in a game they trailed 28-14 at the half.
- December 18, 2009: The Football Championship Subdivision, the second highest level of college football in the United States, held their National Championship Game. Villanova defeated Montana by a score of 23-21 to capture their first national championship.
- December 12, 2009: Northwest Missouri State had been to five straight NCAA Division II National Football Championship games, but lost the previous four. This year, they finally won, defeating Michigan's Grand Valley State by a score of 30-23.
- December 12, 2009: Navy wins the 2009 edition of the Army–Navy Game, defeating Army by a score of 17-3. The loss eliminated Army from bowl eligibility and secured Navy their eighth straight victory in the 109-year old series.
