Police Lines School and College, Rangpur (Bengali: পুলিশ লাইন্স স্কুল অ্যান্ড কলেজ, রংপুর; pronounced [PLSCR] )[2] also known as PLSCR is an educational institution under the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dinajpur, located in the heart of Rangpur City. This institution operates under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police of Rangpur district.[3][4][5]

History

Police Lines School and College Rangpur initiated its academic activity in 1986 under the patronage of the police super of Rangpur, Mominullah Patwari. The first batch of students passed in 1989 with one student topped the list in humanity group in the Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary, Rajshahi. But the institution dates back to 1954 as a primary school. The present premises replaced an old tinshed building. Since then the institution has started to assume a full-fledged institutional character with efforts by police officials and local charitable persons who generously contributed to it. By 1987 a high school was founded and it got affiliation from the government in 1988. In 1989 a kindergarten section was introduced following a painstaking effort of Syed Serajul Islam, the police super. Another milestone was achieved when the institution expanded to higher secondary or college section in 1996 due to the efforts of M. A. Mabud, then the police super of Rangpur.

Hasanul Haider, another police super, founded the sixth college building in 2006.[6]

Location

The institution is located on Police Lines Road in the center of Rangpur city, adjacent to the district police headquarters, City highway, Rangpur City, Bangladesh, and in the midst of Rangpur Zoo, Rangpur Cricket Garden and Rangpur Stadium. Its central location makes it easily accessible from every parts of Rangpur.[7]

The campus covers an area of 11 acres. The institution has three academic buildings containing 147 classrooms, a library, a prayer room, and individual laboratories for physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and other subjects.

There is a large auditorium and a canteen adjacent to the old school building. There are two playgrounds in front of the buildings, a badminton court, a basketball court and a pond in front of the playground.

Curriculum

The syllabus of every class is made by the teachers of this institution according to the rules of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dinajpur. The language of instruction is Bengali. The students have to participate in the laboratory workout as well as theory classes. Three semester exam is taken in a year.

Facilities

  • Police Lines School and College, Rangpur is equipped with a rich library, computer labs, and well-stocked science laboratories. The institution also emphasizes sports, with provisions for football, cricket, volleyball, basketball, and athletics. The campus includes a mosque, a medical center, a canteen, and shelters for students’ guardians. Additionally, the institution has a Shaheed Minar to honor those who sacrificed their lives during the Language Movement of 1952.

Co-curricular Activities

The institution strongly encourages co-curricular activities alongside academic studies. The institution's sports teams, particularly in cricket, football, table tennis, and basketball are well-recognized. Handball is notably popular among the female students.

Cultural events are held throughout the year, including celebrations for International Mother Language Day, Independence Day, and Victory Day. Science fairs, art exhibitions, and inter-school competitions are regularly organized. The annual sports day is a highlight event, with students participating in a wide range of athletic activities, parades, and inter-house competitions. Additionally, there are Boy Scouts, Girls' Guides, and Bangladesh Red crescent society within the institution, encouraging leadership and teamwork among students.

Publications

  • Police Lines School and College, Rangpur* publishes an annual magazine, "Antor Deepa," showcasing students' creative writing, artwork, and achievements. The institution’s debating club and quiz teams are highly active, frequently participating in national competitions.

Seats

At the higher secondary level, there are approximately 550 seats in the science group, 100 in the commerce group, and 100 in the humanities group, making a total of 750 seats available.[8]
