Paulista Essay (Portuguese: Redação Paulista) is an educational platform of the São Paulo Media Center (CMSP). It was launched in August 2023 by the São Paulo State Department of Education (SEDUC-SP) and is designed to enhance students' writing skills through structured essay-writing exercises. The Paulista Essay aims to foster critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication among students.

The platform operates on a monthly cycle, introducing at least one new essay topic each month.[1] Accompanying each topic are a statement and a support text that provide context and guidance for students. After completing their essays, students have the opportunity to use AI-powered tools for initial corrections before their work is finalized by their teachers.[2]

Objective

[edit]

The primary objective of the Paulista Essay is to improve the writing skills of students across the state of São Paulo. By encouraging regular practice, the platform aims to help students articulate their thoughts clearly and effectively. Additionally, the Paulista Essay seeks to prepare students for the demands of academic writing, such as ENEM and the vestibular. Moreover, the integration of artificial intelligence in the correction process allows for immediate feedback, enabling students to learn from their mistakes in real time.[3]

Structure

[edit]

Each essay prompt begins with a statement that outlines the topic, followed by a support text that offers additional information and context. After reviewing these materials, students can draft their essays using the platform's features.[2]

Once an essay is completed, students have several options for finalizing their work. They can choose to "correct online" with the AI tool, which provides instant feedback on grammar and orthography. Alternatively, they can select "conclude" to submit their essay for final grading by their teachers or "save draft" to return to it later. The essays are scored out of a maximum of 100 points, with the final grade reflecting both the AI corrections and the teacher's evaluation.[2]

History

[edit]

The Paulista Essay was officially launched in August 2023 by SEDUC-SP. In December of the same year, an AI tool was incorporated to assist in the correction of essays, providing students with immediate, data-driven feedback.[4] By May 2024, the platform had generated over 4,600,000 essays. The number of texts produced in the 2024 school year marked a 41.7% increase compared to the total number of essays corrected during the entire second semester of the previous year (2023).[5]

The success of the Paulista Essay laid the groundwork for further initiatives, leading to the introduction of the São Paulo Essay Olympiad (REDASP) in August 2024. This competition uses the Paulista Essay platform and also encourages students to showcase their writing abilities in a more competitive setting.[5]
