History
[edit]Once there lived a Chollha king. He was a Shaivite. During that period, Ramanuja, a vaishnavite scholar lived in Srirangam. The king was jealous on Ramanuja because of his popularity as a vaishnavite. So he ordered his men to capture Ramanuja. When the men arrived Srirangam, they were unable to identify Ramanuja. But Ramanuja's disciple Koorathaallhvaar identified himself as Ramanuja. So, the men arrested Koorathaallhvaar. The guru of Ramanuja, Peiya Nambi, aged 105, with her daughter, also accompanied Koorathaallhvaar. While on meeting the king, they were ordered to express in writing that the king's religion (Shaivism) is greater than their religion (Vaishnavism). They refused to do so. So the angry king ordered to pluck off their eyes. But Koorathaallhvaar, he himself took off his eyes and the king's men plucked off Periya Nambi's eyes and they were relieved from the king's court. Periya Nambi's daughter along with the other disciples of Ramanuja who were accompanied with them from Srirangam, started back their journey to Srirangam. On their return, at this place of Pasupathikoil, due to the ageing and illness of Periya Nambi, they rested for a while.
At this time, Vishnu as Varadharaja Perumal granted darshan and salvation to Periya Nambi, in this place.
Later, this place was renowned as a temple area where the main deity of the temple as Varadharaja Perumal.[3]
