The Nissan Diesel Big Thumb (Japanese: 日産ディーゼル・ビッグサム) is a heavy-duty commercial vehicle that was produced by the Japanese manufacturer Nissan Diesel (now UD Trucks) and sold between 1990 and 2014. As the successor to the Nissan Diesel C-series, the Big Thumb was available with 2-axle, 3-axle, 4-axle, 5-axle and very rarely, 6-axle configurations, as well as with a short cab and a sleeper cab with either a low roof or high roof.
Most Big Thumb trucks can be distinguished with a side badge that includes the chassis type and engine horsepower, as with the Isuzu Giga and Mitsubishi Super Great. Optionally, a V8, V10 or V12 badge is added in the case of a vehicle with a V-type engine.
An example badge: 2640 V8 (6x2*4 chassis, RH8T engine).
Sometimes there's also a "Big Thumb" engine at the front of the truck, however not all trucks have it.
Originally, between 1990 and 1995, the chassis/engine badge was at the front of the truck. As of 1995, the badge was moved to the side of the truck and it included the gross vehicle weight (GVW) and engine horsepower. The chassis/engine badge originally displayed the chassis and engine types but without the engine horsepower and GVW (example: CW62T - 6x4 tractor unit with RF10 engine).
The Big Thumb was facelifted in 1992, 1995, 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2009. The 2009 facelift was the most important one, as the interior was completely overhauled, the sleeper cabs were extended, all cab roofs were raised, GE13 and MD92 engines became Euro 5 compliant, the high sleeper cab was now able to come with two beds and the cab position was slightly raised.
With the 2009 facelift, the Big Thumb became the first truck in the world to come with LED headlights by default. The Big Thumb's principal competitors were the Mitsubishi Fuso Super Great, Isuzu Giga and Hino Profia. The Big Thumb has been succeeded by the Quon in 2004, however production of the Big Thumb continued until 2014.
Between 1990 and 2003, the Big Thumb was sold as the Magnum in the UK. Since 2003, the Magnum was renamed to Big Thumb so it matched all other European countries.
Originally, the taillights in the European Big Thumb were the property of Koito, as with the Japanese Big Thumb. However, since the 1997 facelift the European Big Thumb took the taillights from the Scania 4-series.
