Narayan Prasad Shukla (10 November 1929 – 15 June 2014)[1] was an Indian politician who was the Deputy Speaker of Member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 28 July 1972 to 7 January 1976.[2][3] He was a Minister of State in the Shyama Charan Shukla ministry from 8 January 1976 to 30 April 1977 and as a Member of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1972 to 1977 representing the Indore-4 Assembly constituency.[4][5][6]

He has served as the Deputy Mayor for 12 years and Mayor of Indore Municipal Corporation for 2 years.[7][8]

He was the leader of the Narmada Maiya Chalo movement.[9][10]

Early life and education

Narayan Prasad Shukla was born in Sagore, Madhya Pradesh.[2]

He completed his Master of Arts in English.

He involved in student politics when he was a student of Holkar Science College. Before embarking on his political career, Shukla worked in journalism, serving as an editor for National Herald. He also worked as the Editor-in-Chief at Indore Samachar Press.[11]

Political career

Shukla’s political journey began with his election as a Member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Indore-4 Assembly constituency in 1972 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election. He was appointed as the Deputy Speaker of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly on 28 July 1972, serving until 7 January 1976. He has served as the Minister of State in the Shyamcharan Shukla ministry from 8 January 1976 to 30 April 1977.[12] He had served as Mayor of Indore for two consecutive terms in 1964 and 1965.[11]

Narmada Maiya Chalo Movement

Shukla led the Narmada Maiya Chalo Movement, it ran from 5 July 1970 to 23 August 1970.[9]

Death

Shukla passed away on 15 June 2014, at the age of 83 after a brief illness. He had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia in a private hospital. His last rites were performed the following day.[1]
