NUS Muslim Society

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National University of Singapore Muslim Society (NUSMS), which used to be called the University of Singapore Muslim Society (USMS) [1] or Persatuan Mahasiswa Islam Universiti Singapura (PMIUS),[2] was established in 1963 to provide a platform for students and staff to engage in activities that serve the Muslim community on campus.[3] It is a student-run organisation registered with the Registry of Societies [4] and is currently managed by the 54th Executive Committee (ExCo).[5]

Some of the society's organised initiatives have included Iftar (breaking of the Muslim fast during Ramadan),[6] sports events, Hunger Games,[7][8] night cycling,[9][10] freshmen orientation camp,[11][12][13] Youth Expedition Projects,[14][15] and Islamic Awareness workshops.[16] It had published few publications namely Sedar (1978-1980) [17] and Fount Journal.[18] A group of National University of Singapore undergraduates under the umbrella of the National University of Singapore Muslim Society also initiated APEX Programme at Madrasah Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiah among others.[19]

It is part of the Community Engagement Program (CEP) Network that was set up to promote awareness and understanding of the various faiths and cultures within the NUS student community.[20]

Executive Committee (ExCo) members include Muhammad Faiz Rosli (President, 2014-2015),[21] Muhammad Haziq Bin Jani (President, 2012–2013),[22] Zalman Putra Ahmad Ali (President),[23] Danial Faizsal Anuar (President),[24] Walid Jumblatt Abdullah (Vice President),[25] Muhd Nurhakim (President, 2007),[26] Hasanul Arifin (Vice President),[27] Mohamed Nawab Mohamed Osman (President, 2001–2003),[28] Syed Mohammed Ad'ha Aljunied (President, 1990-2000),[18] Idris Rashid Khan Surattee (President, 1981) [29] and Yaacob Ibrahim (Secretary, 1978) [2]
