Mount Sion Primary School (Irish: Cnoc Síon) is a school in Waterford City, Ireland, founded by Edmund Ignatius Rice in 1802. The school is Edmund Rice's premier school,[citation needed] being the focus point of study in many other Christian Brother schools. The school site is an international visitor centre as it is the site where the Christian Brothers and Presentation Brothers began their mission over 200 years ago.[1][when?]
History
[edit]Mount Sion was made by Edmund Ignatius Rice in 1802, when he saw the street children on Waterford's streets. Rice knew these children were incredibly poor as their clothes were tattered and really bad-looking, and could not afford a school to go to. Rice opened Mount Sion as a free school for those 'street boys', providing the boys with food and water, clothing and financial help to sustain them to be good people when they grow up. Very little information is known about Mount Sion.
