Mockbul Ali OBE is a British diplomat and former British Ambassador with over 20 years experience in conflict negotiation, international security and with extensive expertise in the Muslim world. He has served in a number of high profile roles including foreign policy adviser on the Muslim world to three former Foreign Secretaries, Chief of Staff to the British PM’s Special Envoy to Libya, Deputy Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain and as the British Ambassador to the Dominican Republic and the Republic of Haiti. Early life and education

Ali was born in Yorkshire in the United Kingdom.[4]

He is a graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He later completed his postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Defence Studies,[5] and has a master's degree in international security and strategy from King's College London.[4] Ali speaks eight languages.

Career

Ali joined the then Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2002. He has held a number of roles in London, including as a senior foreign policy adviser to three former Foreign Secretaries on the wider Muslim world and is one of the foremost experts on this subject. He has also worked extensively in conflict negotiation and international security across over 30 countries, with a particular focus on the Muslim world.[6]

His overseas diplomatic postings have included Political Counsellor in Egypt, Chief of Staff to the British Prime Minister's Special Envoy to Libya and British Deputy Ambassador to Bahrain. In 2019, he was appointed the British Ambassador to the Dominican Republic and Haiti and completed his posting at the beginning of November 2024.[7]

Awards and recognition

In 2009, he was listed as one of The 500 Most Influential Muslims globally.[1]

Ali was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 Queen's Birthday Honours.[8]

He also received the Royal College of Defence Studies Award for Strategic Leadership in 2014 and was the first civilian to do so.[9]

In 2023, Ali was featured in the Power list of the Mercado media network, and was the first Western diplomat to be listed amongst leading influencers in the region.[10]

In 2024, Ali was awarded the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella by the President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, for his outstanding contribution to the UK-DR bilateral relationship.[11]

Ali is currently listed in the Who's Who publication of the most influential people in the UK.[12] [13]

Personal life

Ali is a British Muslim by background and is of Bengali South Asian heritage.[1]
