Misako Izu (伊豆美沙子, Izu Misako, born 21 January 1959 Munakata ) is a Japanese politician. She is an Independent , but supported by the Liberal Democratic Party. She was twice elected mayor of Munakata , in Fukuoka Prefecture , and became the first female governor of the prefecture in 2018.

Career

She studied Japanese literature at Kyoto Women's University. She joined the family sake-making business, where she became a manager. She also lectured at Fukuoka University.[1][2]

Izu began her electoral career as a member of the Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly in 2011, which she held for two terms. [1] In 2018, she announced that she would run for municipal elections in Munakata . She campaigned as a continuation of , the city's former mayor, Hiromi Tanii . She focused her campaign promises on local industry, the preservation of the city's heritage, and community building .[1][3]

She was elected mayor of Munakata on 21 April 2018, supported by the Liberal Democratic Party and Kōmeitō, becoming the first female governor of Fukuoka Prefecture. [2]

She was re-elected in April 2022, despite the city's lowest turnout ever recorded.[4]
