She began her career playing roles in the Mexican telenovelas Always yours Acapulco/A Love To Remember (2013) and So Much Love (2015), and then the series Ravens Club (2017). Barrera transitioned to Hollywood in 2018, earning recognition with the series Vida (2018–2020) and the musical film In the Heights (2021). For playing Sam Carpenter in the slasher films Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023), as well as leading the horror-comedies Abigail and Your Monster (both 2024), she established herself as a scream queen.[1][3][4]

Early life

[edit]

Barrera was born and raised in Monterrey, Nuevo León. She studied musical theater at New York University Tisch School of the Arts.[4] She attended the American School Foundation of Monterrey where she appeared in the school's musical productions including Grease, Aida and Footloose.[citation needed]

Career

[edit]

Career beginnings in Mexico (2011–2017)

[edit]
Barrera performing in 2013

Her television debut was on the Mexican reality show La Academia in 2011, where she showed off her talent for singing.[5] In 2013, she was part of the duet Melissa y Sebastian, with whom she recorded her first album and had her first top ten radio hit with their debut single "Mamma Maria", a cover of Ricchi e Poveri's song from the 1980s. In 2015, she recorded the theme song "Volver a caer" alongside the Mexican singer Kalimba, for her telenovela Tanto amor.[6]

In 2010, while still in college (New York University), she participated in the film L for Leisure. In 2012, she participated in two telenovelas, La mujer de Judas and La otra cara del alma.[7] In 2014, she obtained her first starring role in the telenovela Always yours Acapulco/A Love To Remember (Siempre tuya Acapulco).[8] In 2015, she starred in the last telenovela produced by TV Azteca, So Much Love (Tanto amor).[9]

Transition to Hollywood and Leading Scream Franchise (2019–2023)

[edit]

Barrera was cast in the lead role of Lyn on the Starz drama series Life (Vida) in 2018. In August 2020, Barrera was cast as Sam Carpenter on the fifth Scream film, which was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.[10] The film was released on 14 January 2022.[11][12]

In 2021, Barrera starred as Vanessa, an aspiring fashion designer and love interest of the narrator, Usnavi, in the Jon M. Chu directed musical film In the Heights, an adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's stage musical.[13] The film earned widespread critical acclaim, with Monica Castillo of The Wrap praising Barrera's performance: "Vanessa's upbeat salsa anthem, 'It Won't Be Long Now', is perhaps one of the more underrated sequences: It's an impressive showcase for Barrera's talents, giving her a wide range of emotions to move through in one number and one of the few moments in the musical to belt out."[14]

In 2022, she starred in Keep Breathing, a six episode survival drama released on Netflix on 28 June 2022. Following her roles in horror media in 2022, Barrera was crowned a scream queen.[15][16] That same year she starred in the title role in the film musical Carmen alongside Paul Mescal. The film directed by Benjamin Millepied and had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.[17]

Barrera reprised her lead role as Sam Carpenter , the daughter of Billy Loomis in the Scream 6 film which scored the highest opening weekend in the franchise[18] . Melissa performance was well received and her chemistry as on-screen sister to Jenna Ortega was a highlight of the film.

Barrera was cast as Maya in the upcoming film The Collaboration. She stars alongside Jeremy Pope and Paul Bettany as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, reprising their roles from the 2023 Anthony McCarten Broadway production.[19]

In November 2023, it was reported that Barrera had been dropped from her lead role in the upcoming sequel Scream 7. She made social media posts in support of Palestine, in which she described Israel's actions in the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, including "[c]cornering everyone together, with no where to go, no electricity no water", as "genocide and ethnic cleansing". Barrera's firing was condemned as censorship by more than 1,300 Actors & Artists, which was signed by actors such as Oliva Coleman, Harriet Walter, Nicola Coughlan , Emma Seligman, and Aimee Lou Wood. [20] Melissa's dismissal led to her gaining 400K followers within one day and got her rapid fan support in the process from many. Barrera joined Mark Ruffalo , Ramy Youssef , and Susan Sarandon and hundreds of union actors who encourage SAG-AFTRA to protect its stars from potential lost casting and blacklisting as they fight for a ceasefire for Palestine. Barrera, while a pro-Palestine advocate, has disapproved any Antisemitism and stated “First and foremost I condemn antisemitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people. I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism. I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom. Silence is not an option for me.”[21]

The film released to limited audience October 25th, 2024 with Melissa Barrera receiving mass critical praise for her performance as Laura Franco, with many calling it the best performance of her career.[25] In 2024, Barrera was cast alongside Simu Liu to lead a peacock original series produced by James Wan where she plays Michelle , a deceptive character who keeps everyone guessing.[26] Also in 2024, Melissa was cast to lead a country thriller called the Cradle of Granite, which will be the English-language debut of Ariel Escalante and screenplay by Jay Holmes.
