Not done how they would like to deal with requests on meta-wiki is up to them, this is the right landing page. As far as email, if you want the address on meta-wiki changed, you will need to ask over there. — xaosflux Talk 15:59, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

"policy and guide" seems wrong to me; "guideline and explanatory supplement" would probably be correct. That said, perhaps we should easier language, like "guideline and explanation" or "formal guideline and guide". ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:30, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

Message top

The top of the message should say "You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia due to an autoblock affecting your IP address." per MediaWiki:Blockedtext saying "You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia.". Ssjhowarthisawesome (talk) 00:41, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

Cleaning this up

This page has a lot of detailed instructions, especially compared to the much cleaner MediaWiki:Blockedtext. Can we streamline it a bit to make it clearer where to go to remedy if you've been accidentally blocked? That's the main important piece of info; everything else is to some degree clutter. Sdkb (talk) 09:14, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

@Sdkb: here is a sandbox: MediaWiki talk:Autoblockedtext/sandbox, feel free to mock up your proposed changes there. — xaosflux Talk 11:26, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: I don't have any specific proposed changes; I think it'd be better for someone more familiar with blocking to come up with those if anyone is inclined. I just wanted to at least flag the issue. Sdkb (talk) 18:44, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
Hmm, I might get to this at some point if it remains unaddressed, but I'm not very familiar with blocking, so I'd really prefer someone else take it on. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 01:54, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Rephrasing this message

Unfortunately, this message looks too standardized and harsh. I think a better message for this would be "We're sorry, but due to technical reasons, you cannot complete this action at this time. Please try again later. If you still see this message after 24 hours, please leave the following on your talk page: {{unblock-auto|2=$2|3=$1|4=$5}}, or file a request at the unblock ticket request system." See also WP:EFN#Better message for LTA filters (round 2). LTAs and sockpuppets know who they are, so there is no need to point them out except in messages directed at their account. Aasim (talk) 08:29, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Updates

I am updating this message in a few ways while keeping the core content the same:

  • The visual design is being softened somewhat to be a bit more gentle on the eyes while still being visible whenever shown. The general design (left-aligned text, ivmbox-type styling) is a bit more modern now. The shouty red is counterproductive and is being removed; blocked editors are likely to already be upset, and the old design does not help. The new design catches the eye through the background color and the bold text, but has gentle font and condenses the information into one box.
    • Additionally, much of the text is full-width or nearly full-width now.
  • There is now a bit of different text depending on whether the block target is an account or IP address. Previously, there was no distinction.
    • IP addresses now see (reassuring) text describing that they may not be the intended block target: Most people who see this message have done nothing wrong. Some kinds of blocks restrict editing from specific service providers or telecom companies in response to recent abuse or vandalism, and affect other users who are unrelated to that abuse. See below if you do not believe you have done anything wrong. This applies both to ranges and individual IPs (because IPs are often dynamic), and applies to users who are not themselves blocked but are editing from a hardblocked IP.
    • Accounts that have been blocked directly don't see the above text, and the first line is more descriptive: Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia.
  • The links have been made more useful:
    • Our best, most newbie-friendly information is actually in the AAB guideline: especially the answers to common questions by blocked editors. The new text mentions that first, while the old text hid it away as "Appealing blocks: policy". The GAB is also described in sentence form; it's less useful to users who wonder "why the heck am I blocked" but is very useful for editors coming up with block appeals.
    • H:IHBB is deemphasized. It's less useful than the FAQ in AAB and the GAB, and its split off from this interface page was never fully completed. Even to this day it still says things like "The reason for your block may be found above.", which is plainly not true. I would actually rather just delete it, but as long as it's around, I guess we can retain a deemphasized link to it in this interface message.
    • The links have been incorporated into the one box, rather than taking up another box.

Essentially, most of the core text and layout is the same, while the formatting has been improved a bit and some specific changes have been made. Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 07:20, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Just noting here that I think these changes are clear improvements. Mz7 (talk) 06:39, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

Request for update

The text doesn’t seem accurate, especially to anonymous editors. Instead of just “Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia,” use “Your account or IP address has been blocked from editing Wikipedia.” Also, if their ability to edit their own talk page is also revoked, instead of “Even when blocked, you will usually still be able to edit your user talk page and email other editors and administrators,” use “Even when blocked, you will usually still be able to edit your user talk page and email other editors and administrators, unless specifically disallowed from doing so.2600:1700:A2A0:FB50:848A:128:27EA:FEE9 (talk) 01:04, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

As regards "account" or "IP address", there's actually code that detects whether the subject of the block is an account or IP address. The current code is: {{#if:{{#invoke:IPAddress|isIpOrRange|{{{7|$7}}}}}|You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia due to a block affecting your IP address.|Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia.}}, where $7 is replaced with the blocked user or IP. As for the second thing, that's why there's "usually" there; the guide to appealing blocks covers the rare case where this is inaccurate. KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 03:42, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Updates on MediaWiki:Blockedtext to be implemented here as well?

MediaWiki:Blockedtext recently got an updated and in my opinion the update made it better than before and less WP:BITEy to newcomers because the red text in the older versions 1 seemed to be too harsh. Now, if you look at the current version the background color and the text is much soft despite that red sign which may be too bitey, but it can just be not included here because the user is not blocked directly and is autoblocked. I think if the changes to MediaWiki:Blockedtext can be implemented here than it would be better as the current version of the page, in my opinion, is also quite harsh to newcomers. User3749 (talk) 06:39, 7 April 2021 (UTC)

"This account" vs. "your account" vs. "you"

It looks like Jc37 recently changed "your account has been blocked" to "this account has been blocked". I'm guessing that the intention is probably to avoid accusing users who are just caught up in an IP block, but still, the emphasis of that wording seems to encourage socking. It's a very quick mental jump from "this account has been blocked" to "oh, I'll just use another account", but "your account" would make it longer and "you have been blocked" would be better still on that metric. Could we find a way to improve the wording? Courtesy pinging L235 as you recently revamped this message. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 23:20, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

I understand your point, however, there are legitimate reasons for the change.
First, it's less BITE-y. There are many reasons an account is blocked. The more "neutral" we are about it, the better.
Second, while Wikimedia (and the community thereof) gives broad leeway in this, the account actually isn't "yours". You don't own it. (I know, I know, next I'll be breaking hearts and suggest that we don't technically have the right to free speech here : )
I get that you are concerned about socking. So am I. But how we word this won't change a person who is intent on socking. - jc37 07:17, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
@Jc37: I mean, in some technical sense, I guess the WMF owns accounts, but WP:SOCK is pretty clear that it's one editor, one account, and the blocking policy is clear that evading a block by using a different account is disallowed. If "you have been blocked from editing" is too harsh, we could go with something like "you are currently unable to edit Wikipedia" and then explain "your account has been blocked" on the next line. Switching away from the stop sign image would also reduce the harshness. But fundamentally, our policies are too block editors, not accounts, and saying only "this account" almost makes it seem like switching to another account is allowed. Yeah, some people will always sock regardless, but we shouldn't underestimate the suggestive power of language. This page is fairly hidden, but it's an important notice and I'd like to see some broader discussion about how best to optimize it. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 22:53, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
Courtesy pinging Oshwah, I noticed you're editing messages in this space, so you might be interested in weighing in here. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 06:42, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
I thought that "your account" was plenty sufficient. It tells the user that their account has been blocked from editing, and the "your" vs "this" wouldn't give anyone an idea just to create another account and start socking. "You", on the other hand, seems too much like finger-pointing rather than informative. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:53, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

The page currently has a missing end tag Lint error because a closing div tag is missing. It is because the first div tag is not closed at the end of page.

New block notice for Wikipedia

I made a new block notice for Wikipedia to use. Here it is:

This account or IP address has been blocked from editing Wikipedia.
You are still able to view pages, but you are not able to edit, move, or create any.

Editing from $7 has been blocked (disabled) by $1 for the following reason(s) (see the blocking policy):

$2

The block started on $8 and will expire on $6.

Even when blocked, you will usually still be able to edit your user talk page and email other editors and administrators, unless specifically disallowed from doing so.

For the information on how to proceed, first see the FAQ for blocked accounts or IP addresses and the guideline on block appeals. The guide to appealing blocks may also be helpful.

Other useful links: Blocking policy · Help:I have been blocked

Your current IP address is $3, and the block ID is $5.

@Cello Media, could you quickly go through which changes you've made here and why you feel they're warranted? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 21:58, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

Talk page and email access

The line "Even when blocked, you will usually still be able to edit your user talk page and email other editors and administrators." is non-optimal: for editors who can still edit their talk page and email, it should say so, and for editors who have had that access revoked, it should say that. Is there a way we could get it smart enough to know the difference? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 22:22, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

Redundant help pages

I just looked through the help pages linked in this message, and they very much suffer from the same problem that quite often comes up, where we have multiple redundant pages that are ultimately just confusing when all linked. There's Wikipedia:Blocking policy, Wikipedia:Appealing a block, which contains the FAQ for blocked editors, Wikipedia:Guide to appealing blocks, and Help:I have been blocked. This is too much—we only need two pages, one laying out our policy in detail (for setting standards for editors issuing blocks) and one for pointing blocked users to to answer their questions. If anyone wants to take this on as a project, the rest should all be merged. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 06:32, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Sdkb Not to mention there was also WP:What to do if you are blocked, which was boldly redirected to AAB because it was just very poorly written and even says Eventually you may be unblocked. Then you are done. Or you may not. Then you are not.
I agree, we only need the blocking policy and AAB. Will probably request merge soon. User3749 (talk) 13:33, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi @JJMC89: I undid your recent bold change, mostly because you eliminated the route to UTRS. This message could still be too long, and there could be parts worth trimming - but in the event that someone can't edit and comes across this message I think advertising the UTRS option is still useful. Is there a part of the workflow I'm missing where that would never be useful? — xaosflux Talk 01:29, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

Take 2 for the new block (July 2021)

I made the block notice look like Logopedia. Here it is:

Your username $7 has been blocked by $1.
You are still able to view pages, but you are not able to edit, move, or create any.

  • Reason given: $2
  • Start of block: $8
  • Expiration of block: $6

--Cello Media (talk) 13:33, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

@Cello Media, saying "Your username" is inaccurate. Blocks are not placed on a username; instead they are placed on a user. It should say "You have been blocked by [...]" or "You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia". Using alternative accounts to evade blocks is not allowed on Wikipedia. I don't understand Lua (or Module:String) well enough to fix it myself, but I think it should be easy. You just need to strip out characters U+202A through U+202E before passing the block target ($7) to Module:IPAddress. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 22:45, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
I'll fix this soon but will take some time to digest it (I'm wondering whether more should be cleaned while I'm at it, and I think I saw a generic cleaner mentioned at WP:VPT months ago). Johnuniq (talk) 05:24, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Quick tests

Each of the following is a test of {{#invoke:IPAddress|isIpOrRange|2A06:E80:0:0:0:0:0:0/36}}. The last two have directional markers which won't be visible in the HTML. Each row should display "range".

  • 1: range (no directional markers)
  • 2: range (LRE + PDF)
  • 3: range (LRM + LRE + PDF)

Since these two images are typically associated with blocks more than the stop hand image, could the icon change between or depending on if the block expiry says "no expiry set" or not? I've programmed something like this on an old test wiki I ran on ShoutWiki...

{{#ifeq:$6|no expiry set|[[File:Stop x nuvola.svg|50px|alt=Stop icon]]|[[File:Stop x nuvola with clock.svg|50px|alt=Stop icon with clock]]}}

Zeke Essiestudy (talk/contributions) 08:27, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

Not done @Zeke Essiestudy: this is more of message that you have been stopped by command of someone than just "this isn't permitted" that the first icon indicates, and the second one seems to indicate that this is only not permitted for a little while - then it will be again (when the action that caused the block is likely not tolerable, even if the block expires). thematically and illustriously this could be an improvement - but should get a wider discussion first. If you would like to pursue this, please seek additional consensus - perhaps by advertising this discussion at WP:VPM. — xaosflux Talk 13:58, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

Big edit request (but one that may helpful for futureproofing)

This is a big edit request; however I believe it is uncontroversial because it changes next to nothing for anyone that sees the blocked notice.

I created a template {{blocked text}} aimed at standardizing the block message regardless on the type of block. Since the block message does not change much by the kind of block (mostly following the same format), I created a template with a generic format where text and wiki markup can be added after. All of these calls come straight from the {{blocked text/testcases}} page, albeit a couple of minor wording changes.

For MediaWiki:Blockedtext, replace it with

{{Blocked text|$1|$2|$3|$4|$5|$6|$7|$8
|usefullink1=Wikipedia:Blocking policy{{!}}Blocking policy
|usefullink2=Help:I have been blocked
}}

For MediaWiki:Blockedtext-partial, replace it with

{{Blocked text|$1|$2|$3|$4|$5|$6|$7|$8
|blockheader=This action from this (userorip) has been [[Wikipedia:Blocking policy#Partial blocks|partially blocked]] on Wikipedia.

== What does this mean? ==
As on many websites, Wikipedia administrators occasionally [[Wikipedia:Blocking policy|block]] accounts and IP ranges that are deemed responsible for or related to problematic activity. You may be an innocent victim of [[collateral damage]], whereby a block of some other activity has accidentally caused your account to be unable to edit pages. If your editing access has been blocked by mistake, it will be reactivated very quickly, as soon as you let an administrator know of the problem. The box above gives the information you will need.

;What is a block?

:A [[Wikipedia:Blocking policy|block]] is a measure used to protect Wikipedia from possible improper use, or modification in breach of [[Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines|editorial policies]]. Once a block has expired, they become history unless problems reoccur. Blocks can be applied to a user account, an IP address, or a [[Subnetwork|range of IP addresses]]. [[Wikipedia:Autoblock|A number of automated features]] identify unblocked usage which apparently should be blocked; these are known as ''autoblocks'' and can be quickly rectified if incorrect.

;Most common causes of an autoblock:

:The typical cause of an autoblock is because your IP address or network is either the same one used by another blocked account, or [[Wikipedia:Autoblock|the software believes]] your account or IP address is connected to ''another'' blocked account. Due to the nature of some [[Internet service provider]]s, automatic blocks may inadvertently affect people other than the person who the block was intended for.
== Rectifying an autoblock ==
=== Unblock request ===
If you are unjustly affected by this block, please copy the following text and paste it to the '''bottom''' of [[{{ns:Special}}:Mytalk|your user talk page]]:

<nowiki>{{</nowiki>unblock-auto{{!}}2=<nowiki>$2</nowiki>{{!}}3=$1{{!}}4=$5<nowiki>}}</nowiki>

Once you have followed the instructions above, an administrator will be alerted to your unblock request, and will respond shortly in order to review the block.

If this is a problem that affects you ''repeatedly'', we encourage you to contact your [[Internet service provider]] or IT department, and ask them to contact [[Wikimedia Foundation|Wikimedia's]] [[meta:XFF project|XFF project]] about enabling [[X-Forwarded-For]] HTTP headers on their [[proxy server]]s. This will reduce the chances of you being affected by future automatic blocks.

=== Alternative option ===
You will usually receive a faster response by posting the
<nowiki>{{</nowiki>unblock-auto{{!}}2=<nowiki>$2</nowiki>{{!}}3=$1{{!}}4=$5<nowiki>}}</nowiki>
template onto your user talk page, as described in the instructions above. If you need help, however, you can submit a request to the [[WP:UTRS|Unblock Ticket Request System]] by clicking on "submit an unblock requuest" below. Make sure to include the block ID number shown in the box above.

Even though requests sent to the Unblock Ticket Request System are viewable only by [[Wikipedia:Administrators|administrators]] and trusted volunteers, under '''no circumstances''' should you send anyone your account's password, or reveal it to anyone else - ''even if you're asked to do so''.

This system exists for the purpose of reviewing blocks only—any request to make edits to articles on your behalf will be disregarded. Correspondence containing [[Wikipedia:No legal threats|legal threats]], [[Wikipedia:No personal attacks|personal attacks]] or [[Wikipedia:Civility|rudeness]] are likely to be ignored and may result in having your current block extended.

After, {{blocked text}} should be fully protected. I believe this is uncontroversial because this is unifying the styling into one, and it does next to nothing for user experience. A few more things that are robust, like indef block detection, is also present in this template. Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis 23:57, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Stop hand

Is the stop hand really appropriate for users who have been blocked? It was added in February 2021 by User:Oshwah. This even appears at MediaWiki:Autoblockedtext which may be seen by users who have done nothing wrong and may make the person who sees it feel angry or otherwise it may be seen as rude. Templates like Template:Uw-spamublock already have the cross sign but I think the stop hand for all blocks is inappropriate. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:40, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

The icons for Wikipedia's interface overall are a mess. I agree that we should avoid using overly harsh iconography, as that can anger folks. But also, a block notice is among the most significant pieces of "stop what you're doing" information an editor can get, so I could see an argument the icon is justified. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 05:32, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
I would support removing the icon. The message is plenty visible without it, and I agree with @Crouch about the tone it conveys. Ping to @Oshwah. Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 10:31, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
I'm open to whatever the community decides. Just ping me when a decision is reached, and I'll be happy to make any changes that you wish to be made. :-) If it's decided that File:Stop hand nuvola.svg does not belong in the blocked text notice, I highly recommend that we at least replace it with File:Information.svg. I believe that an icon of some kind is important. It's visual; it grabs the reader's attention, and it visualizes the importance of the notification without the user even having to know or understand one drop of this language. Without an icon displayed at all, some users might not understand that they should look at it, let alone even read it. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:36, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
I can support the information icon as a compromise. Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 18:35, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
I think it is appropriate for hard blocks. — xaosflux Talk 12:55, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
The specific user talk page messages like {{Uw-voablock}} that are added to the talk page or specific templates like Uw-spamublock are surely sufficient for this. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:57, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
That seems to say more of a "this isn't allowed" vs a "YOU have been stopped", when in fact the block is now about a person, not specific action. — xaosflux Talk 18:08, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
A block notice on the user's talk page is a message about the person rather than a specific action like {{Uw-vandalism1}} is. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:18, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
Yes, and the "stop hand" is a symbol that speaks "to a person". — xaosflux Talk 18:23, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
If the stop hand isn't justified here, I'm not sure where it would be justified. But I can see both ways about whether it's justified here. A broader rethink of our icon system is really in order. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:53, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
This icon might be a better icon, since it is saying that "no, you cannot do this at this time", whereas the stop hand conveys "please stop what you are doing". Or even better would be this icon, since it conveys that there was a problem when attempting to edit the page. Or the icon can remain as is. Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis ❄️ 15:24, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
What do other large websites do for blocked users? I'm guessing there are some best practices we could consider. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 16:07, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
Discord has an icon with a stop sign and a timer for a timed out user and a banhammer for a banned user. The banhammer is not visible though to those that are banned, they just get the "invalid invite" and "the user is banned from this guild" when a banned user attempts to join. https://cdn.discordapp.com/emojis/957101538084548608.webp since I have this as an icon/emoji in one of the Discord servers I am in. Please change {{MediaWiki:Blockedtext|...}} to {{Blockedtext|...}}.

The reason is because the current way the messages are being called does not work as it is supposed to. While using the namespace name will just copy the page as if it was a template, int: will copy the interface message as if it was an interface message. See the difference between this:

Please add to the end of the message "If you believe you are seeing this message in error, you may submit an appeal on the administrators' noticeboard, on your talk page, or by UTRS." Proposal to remove the red hand and make the text smaller

The red hand is unnecessary to get attention, as is the giant text. They're especially inappropriate for IP blocks, where most users are seeing this because of collateral damage. I plan to remove the red hand and make the top line smaller text. Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 19:53, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

I disagree.
That said, I agree that we probably could use additional text better explaining about "collateral damage".
The text at Help:I have been blocked used to reside here. When it was removed, so went the explanatory text. - jc37 21:15, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jc37: Mind sharing why you disagree? Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 19:38, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
I think Xaosflux explained better than I could, below. There are reasons that images are used on motorways, for example. We use images (and colour, for that matter) to help illustrate and convey. See also Pictogram#Standardization.
Besides, a hand that says "stop", is a neutral statement. I'm not seeing an issue here that needs addressing on that count. - jc37 04:08, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
Especially for IP blocks, we can't assume the editor has English as a primary language, this iconography sends a good message of "you have been stopped". — xaosflux Talk 19:42, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
