Mariyam Shaina Naseem (Dhivehi: މަރިޔަމް ޝައިނާ ނަސީމް; born 22 February 2003) is a Maldivian model and beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss Maldives 2024, represented the country in Miss Universe 2024 for the first time in Maldivian history.

Shaina won the Top Model Maldives 2022 and participated in the Top Model of the World and got 'New Face Award'.

Career

[edit]

Shaina was first seen by the world in 2023, when she won the title 'Top Model Maldives 2022', where she participated in the 29th edition of the Top Model of the World, where she got the title 'New Face Award' and ranked in the top fifteen.[1][2][3]

Controversy

[edit]

On 30 October 2024, the Embassy of Mexico in India's ambassador Diego Pérez, granted a visa to Shaina for her to contest in Miss Universe 2024.[4] After the announcement of Shaina contesting for Miss Universe, being the first Maldives contender, she was condemned by the Maldives' Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts for joining.[1][5] Her participation caused debate which prominent local Islamic scholars including the ministry calling for her to resign, while others saying to empower Shaina for participating.[6][7] She joined Miss Universe through her management company, He n She Maldives, without the backing by the Maldivian government.[7]
