History

[edit]

Mandra was founded by the Jasgasm Rajputs who claim to be descendants of Zarab Khan. The Jasgam, sometimes written as Jaskham are a tribe found in Kahuta and Gujrakhan Tehsil of Rawalpindi. They share a common ancestry with the Dhund and Khatril, with whom they share many customs and traditions. So, who exactly are the Jasgam?

Horace Arthur Rose was an early 20th Century British colonial official who co-authored A Glossary of the Tribes and Castes of the Punjab and North-West Frontier Province, which is one of the most comprehensive glossaries on the tribes of Punjab, and a good source on many Punjabi tribes. He describes the Jasgam as follows: a clan of Musalman Rajputs, found in the Murree hills. Like the Dhunds and Khatrils they claim descent from Manaf an ancestor of the Prophet and got possession of the tract they now occupy under Gakkhar rule, when one Zuhair a descendant of the Prophet, came from Arabia anil settled near Kahuta.

The Jasgam use the title of Raja and Khan. The tribe is most prominent political and land lord family in Mandrah. The family has contributed a lot for the locals, including opening the first government hospital and being active in community service. After independence in 1947 they gave lands to Muhajarins to settle. As per tribe's history and norms, Jasgams use the title of Raja. They helped other homeless people to settle and give them shelter. Today among Mandra's most prominent people are the Jaskham Rajputs as they own most of the land and markets in the Main Baazaar and are very active in politics and social work.
