Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu (Amharic: ማሞ እስመላለም ምህረቱ) is an Ethiopian economist and lawyer who is the governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) since 2023. Mamo has worked with the World Bank as the Senior Private Sector Specialist at the World Bank Group (WBG) in Nairobi, Kenya from 2010 to 2018.

Education and career

Mamo Mihretu holds a LLB degree from Addis Ababa University, a diploma in international trade and investment from the University of Amsterdam and a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard Kennedy School.[1] Mamo has over 16 years experience in economic policy, legal, and logistics sector reforms, dubbed the "young liberal technocrats".[2]

In 2010, Mamo joined the World Bank where he has worked with Senior Private Sector Specialist at the World Bank Group (WBG) in Nairobi, Kenya.[3][4] After Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018, he was senior economic adviser to Abiy Ahmed.

On 20 January 2023, Mamo was as the new governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), replacing Yinager Dessie.[5][6]

Personal life

Mamo is the father of one child.[2]
