Magpie is a 2024 neo-noir thriller film directed by Sam Yates, starring Daisy Ridley and Shazad Latif. It premiered at the 2024 South by Southwest festival on 9 March 2024.

Premise

A father chaperones his daughter, who is co-starring in a film with a popular actress, while his wife is at home with their newborn baby. He soon finds himself falling in love with the actress.

Before the 2022 Cannes Film Market, Magpie was announced as a project for buyers to distribute. The film had Sam Yates attached to direct a screenplay written by Tom Bateman. The original story was developed by Daisy Ridley, who was also attached to star opposite Shazad Latif. Matilda Lutz was included in the cast as well.[2]

Principal photography began in January 2023, with plans for a month-long shoot.[3]

Release

Magpie had its world premiere on 9 March 2024 at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.[4][1] In May 2024, Signature Entertainment acquired the UK distribution rights.[5] In August 2024, Shout! Studios acquired the North American distribution rights.[6] The film was released in the United States on October 25, 2024.[7]

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 77% of 31 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.1/10.[8]
