MIAT Mongolian Airlines Flight 557 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight in Mongolia from Ulaanbaatar to Mörön. On 21 September 1995, the Antonov An-24 crashed on approach to Mörön, resulting in the tragic loss of 41 out of the 42 people on board. This incident stands as the deadliest aviation accident in Mongolian history.

Aircraft

The aircraft involved was an An-24PB (serial number 57310103 and construction number 101-03) manufactured by the Antonov Serial Production Plant in 1975 and delivered to МIAT Mongolian Airlines during the era of the Mongolian's People's Republic under the registration BNMAU-10103. In May 1995, the registration was changed to МТ-1008, although this change was not applied to the aircraft.

Accident

The flight was carrying 37 passengers and six crew members from Ulaanbaatar to Mörön. During the journey, the crew made the decision to switch to visual flight, considering the visibility to be adequate. However, while descending on the approach, the pilots initiated the descent prematurely. Consequently, at approximately 12:30, the aircraft collided with the Choho Geologloh Uul mountain, resulting in the deaths of all six crew members and 36 of the 37 passengers, with only one passenger named Ulziibayar Sanjaa surviving the crash.
