The Laos national badminton team (Lao: ທີມດອກປີກໄກ່ ແຫ່ງຊາດ ລາວ) represents Laos in international badminton team competitions.[1][2] It is managed by the Badminton Lao Federation (Lao: ສະຫະພັນຕີດອກປີກໄກ່ແຫ່ງຊາດລາວ; abbreviated as BLF). The Laotian team participated in the Southeast Asian Games and won three bronze medals in 1959 and 1961. The national team also competes in the Lao International, also known as the BEERLAO International Series.
Badminton has been played in Laos since the early 20th century. The national team was formed in February 1955 after the formation of the Badminton Lao Federation which was then called Association de Badminton du Royaume de Laos. The Laotian team then competed in local sport events. Laos won their first few medals in badminton at the 1959 Southeast Asian Peninsular Games when Boonpheng Siaksone and Tiock won bronze in men's doubles.[6] Since 2007, Laos has competed in the Southeast Asian Games team events.
In 2009, Khamkouy Phontexa and Somsaveng Semsylvong were appointed as coaches for the national team. [7][8]
The Laotian women's team first competed at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games. The women's team had the same fate as the men's team when they also lost in the quarter-finals to Thailand. In 2009, the team lost 0–3 to Singapore.[12]
The Laotian mixed team competed in the 2023 Southeast Asian Games.[13] The team were given a bye in the quarter-finals and entered the semi-finals where they went head to head against home team Cambodia. The team scored the first point when national mixed doubles pair Namboun Luangamath and Thidachane Sypaseuth defeated Cambodia's Yam Samnang and Seavty Teav 22–20, 22–20. In the second match, the Laotian team failed to win the second point after Manut Phiasoulin lost to Sok Rikreay 21–10, 20–22, 10–21. The Laotian team lost in the semi-finals after they lost in the women's doubles tiebreaker match.[14] The team were awarded bronze.[15]
