Kirby Fighters 2 is a 2020 fighting game for the Nintendo Switch and is the direct sequel to Kirby Fighters Deluxe. Developed by HAL Laboratory and Vanpool and published by Nintendo, the game features characters and assets from the Kirby franchise and uses the Super Kirby Clash game engine. The game released worldwide in September 2020, but was accidentally leaked prior on the Play Nintendo website.

Gameplay

[edit]

Kirby Fighters 2 is a platform fighting game for up to four players on either the same console or online/Local play.[1] Each player can choose an ability based on copy abilities from prior Kirby games, as well as a new ability called Wrestler Kirby, and each comes with a different moveset. While most characters are different variants of Kirby, additional characters such as King Dedede and Meta Knight are playable as well.[2]

The game's story mode, titled The Destined Rivals, is divided into five chapters where the player must fight a series of consecutive CPU-controlled enemy Kirby with randomized copy abilities alongside a CPU-controlled ally. The latter three chapters culminate in a battle against King Dedede and Meta Knight. It starts when Kirby receives a letter from King Dedede and Meta Knight. It says that they've challenged Kirby to a match. They would wait for Kirby at the summit of a really tall tower known as the buddy Fighters tower. Kirby managed to partner up with a buddy [Bandana Waddle Dee, Gooey or Magolor] and entered the tower. At the summit they found what they thought were the duo but instead was Twin Woods [Two Whispy Woods]. Kirby and his buddy defeated Twin Woods who dropped a key to the next part of the tower. At the summit were King Dedede and Meta Knight who were defeated by Kirby and the Buddy. They had done it! Or had they... King dedede and Meta Knight turned into a pair of Waddle Dees? Turns out the duo were even higher in the tower. The Waddle Dees dropped another key that lead to the next part of the tower where they found the real Dedede and Meta Knight. They brawled as hard as they could but team Kirby was stronger. Unfortunately the destined rivals left the arena at the last second. So Kirby and his buddy climbed to the top of the tower. On the way they encounter previous Bosses and Mini Bosses like Twin Woods and the Edge duo. They also fought Shadow Kirby from Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. They [eventually] found the King and Knight. They fought tireless but Kirby once again claimed victory. Suddenly the tower grew and Dedede and Meta Knight were even higher. They were at the top. The very top. Kirby and his buddy went up 50 more floors with so many rencounters with Bosses. Eventually they got there. King Dedede and Meta Knight started out by using what they did in the last two fights just with a bit of extra difficulty. Then when they were defeated Meta Knight's helmet cracked in half. The King knew that his BFF would be embarrassed so he bought out another helmet and chucked it at him. Meta Knight put it on and Dedede grabbed his own helmet. The helmets corrupted them turning them into the warning cresent warriors. There was one way to defeat them now. The Buddy Star Blaster. Kirby and his buddy teamed up to use it's power and destroyed the destined rivals. King Dedede and Meta Knight then realised that they didn't need the masks to make them stronger. All they needed was the power of teamwork and friendship.

Development and release

[edit]

Kirby Fighters 2 was developed by HAL Laboratory and Vanpool, and published by Nintendo, using the Super Kirby Clash game engine. The game released worldwide on September 23, 2020, on the Nintendo eShop, six years after the previous title, Kirby Fighters Deluxe.[3][4][5] Shortly after, the game received a free demo.[6] Although the game was released in September, the game was accidentally showcased on the Play Nintendo website as a downloadable title prior to release.[7]

Game developer Tadashi Kawai created a blog post describing the development process of Kirby Fighters 2. He wrote how the "single-player mode evolved from the idea that "this is a multiplayer game, but I want to develop a mode that is fun, even when playing alone." He also described the game's development during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, when all developers were remote workers.[8]

Reception

[edit]

The game was met by "mixed or average" reviews, according to the review aggregator Metacritic.[9]
