Kapamilya Channel (lit. 'family member channel'; stylized as Kapamilya channel) is a 24-hour Philippine pay television network operated by ABS-CBN Corporation, a subsidiary of the Lopez Holdings Corporation. The network's headquarters are located at the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center in Quezon City. Kapamilya Channel broadcasts in high-definition with a 1080i resolution, continuing the quality standards of its predecessor.
The channel was launched as a replacement for the main terrestrial ABS-CBN network, which ceased its free-to-air broadcast operations in 2020 following the non-renewal of its legislative broadcast franchise, carrying many of the network's programs before and after its launch.[1]
Overview
[edit]The channel has been available through most cable providers who are members of the Philippine Cable and Telecommunications Association (PCTA) (including ABS-CBN's Sky Cable and Streamtech's Planet Cable) and through direct broadcast satellite television service providers Sky Direct (until June 30, 2020), G Sat, and since October 21, 2020, through Cignal and SatLite.[2] This allowed ABS-CBN Corporation to continue producing and distributing content while the outcome of their congressional franchise application was still pending at that time since the NTC's cease and desist order for the network only covers the company's free-to-air television and radio stations.[3][4][5] The network's franchise renewal was rejected by the House of Representatives on July 10, 2020, after a 70-11 vote.[6] The network streams live and makes most of its shows available on the streaming service iWantTFC.[7] On August 1, 2020, the network officially launched the Kapamilya Online Live service, which live-streams some of the content from Kapamilya Channel and Jeepney TV on Facebook and YouTube.[8] Although the network itself is available only in the Philippines, most of its local programs are available on ABS-CBN's international subscription service The Filipino Channel via cable, satellite, online and IPTV.
Like ABS-CBN, Kapamilya Channel operates 24/7 with Movie Central Presents shown during its overnight slots; between Maundy Thursday and Black Saturday, during the Paschal Triduum as part of Holy Week observance customs in the Philippines, the channel signs off from 12:00 m.n. to 6:00 a.m.[5] The channel, along with TeleRadyo Serbisyo, broadcasts the daily Three O'Clock Prayer (Filipino: Panalangin sa Ikatlo ng Hapon) similar to the main terrestrial ABS-CBN.
On July 1, 2024, Kapamilya Channel, along with its free TV counterpart, A2Z, began broadcasting using the anamorphic 16:9 screen ratio format on their standard definition (SD) feed to provide viewers with an optimized viewing experience.[citation needed] As the channel uses the same 2014 playout of the defunct ABS-CBN terrestrial network, the move effectively phased out the 4:3 aspect ratio used by ABS-CBN for almost 71 years since the network and the Philippine television established on October 23, 1953, and 6 years and 2 months when the ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs programs switched to full high definition on April 2, 2018.[citation needed]

Kapamilya Channel features programs, that have aired or were slated to air on ABS-CBN, whose productions were suspended due to the Luzon enhanced community quarantine in March 2020 and the ensuing uncertainty following the NTC's cease and desist order against ABS-CBN.[9] These include the variety shows It's Showtime (with new segments)[10] and ASAP; drama series FPJ's Ang Probinsyano, Love Thy Woman and A Soldier's Heart;[1] and morning talk show Magandang Buhay.[1] Two new public service programs made their debut on Kapamilya Channel, Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan? hosted by Judy Ann Santos and Iba 'Yan hosted by Angel Locsin.[9]
Contrary to earlier news reports,[1] ABS-CBN's primary news program, TV Patrol, as well as several news and current affairs programs, were not initially aired on the Kapamilya Channel until after July 24, 2020; until then, the program aired exclusively on TeleRadyo, ANC, and Cine Mo! and streamed through the ABS-CBN News' Facebook page and YouTube channel. The delayed telecast of ANC's The World Tonight also began to air at 10:00 p.m. on the following Monday, July 27, 2020, making the two longest-running Filipino and English language evening newscasts in the country airing on the same channel since 1999. The morning simulcast of TeleRadyo's programming (which was also aired on ABS-CBN as a provisionary morning program prior to the shutdown) on the schedule remained the same. An evening 30-minute News Patrol program was aired on the Kapamilya Channel until July 24, 2020.[5]
On August 17, 2020, Ang sa Iyo ay Akin was the first original drama series broadcast on Kapamilya Channel and Kapamilya Online Live during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the scenes were shot in the ABS-CBN Soundstage inside the Horizon IT Park in Bulacan.[11]
On September 12, 2020, the network launched Just Love Kids, a children's programming block focusing on educational programs and animated series that have previously aired on ABS-CBN, Knowledge Channel, and the defunct Yey! channel.[12] The children's show Team Yey! premiered its new fifth season for the first time on Kapamilya Channel.
On October 10, 2020, ABS-CBN programs began broadcasting on A2Z Channel 11, a free-to-air television channel joint venture between ABS-CBN and ZOE Broadcasting Network under an airtime lease.
On October 21, 2020, Kapamilya Channel became available on Cignal owned by MediaQuest Holdings, the owner of ABS-CBN's rival TV5, to increase channel views.[2] On January 24, 2021, selected Kapamilya Channel programs started simulcasting on TV5 as part of an agreement between the network, Cignal TV, and ABS-CBN. However, in the following years, several Kapamilya Channel programming simulcasts were later moved to other networks, such as TV Patrol, Magandang Buhay, It's Showtime, and Goin' Bulilit.[13][14] Simulcasting on All TV began on April 15, 2024,[15] marking the return of these programs to their originating free-to-air terrestrial channel frequencies after four years.[16][17] This later became effective after ABS-CBN Corporation and All TV's owner, Advanced Media Broadcasting System (AMBS), which took over the former main ABS-CBN channel frequencies and all of the terrestrial stations two years prior,[18][19] signed content agreements to air ABS-CBN programs on All TV on April 23, 2024.[20] It's Showtime began simulcasting on another rival's GMA Network and GTV on April 6, 2024 and July 1, 2023, respectively, as well.[21]
On March 18, 2021, ABS-CBN and WeTV iflix announced a partnership to bring primetime programs, including FPJ's Ang Probinsyano to the two streaming platforms starting March 20, with early access for subscribed users. Episodes of ABS-CBN shows are made available on WeTV and iflix VIP two days before it airs on local TV.[22]
Online streaming on their channel's official website and Kapamilya Online Live, with the exception of iWantTFC, does not include acquired programming, movie blocks, and overnight programming, as the livestreaming itself only airs original programming due to copyright restrictions.
With the exception of iWantTFC, the channel's official website and Kapamilya Online Live do not include acquired programming, movie blocks, and overnight programming due to copyright restrictions, instead livestreaming original programs.[citation needed]

It streamed daily from 12:00 m.n. to 8:00 a.m. in Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Mongolia, China, Indonesia and Macau only.[23] On April 1-2, 2024 and April 2, 2024 Kapamilya Online Live Global ceased streaming at 12 m.n. due to poor viewers and loss of advertisers' support and to shift its focus on worldwide availability of TFC. Kapamilya Online Live is available in the Philippines, Asia, Australia, Europe, and New Zealand.[citation needed]
