Jayden Reid (born 30 August 2001) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a left-back for St. Louis City SC in Major League Soccer.
Early life
[edit]Reid began playing youth soccer with Jigs Soccer Academy at age eight, later going on to join the New York Red Bulls Academy, where he played five years.[1] He also played with Blau Weiss Gottschee.[2]
College career
[edit]In 2019, Reid began attending the University of Connecticut, where he played for the men's soccer team.[3] On September 14, 2021, he scored his first collegiate goal, also adding two assists, in a 4-0 victory over the Yale Bulldogs.[4] For his senior season in 2022, he was named a team captain.[5] At the end of the 2022 season, he was named to the All-Big East Third Team.[6]
Club career
[edit]In 2021, Reid played with New York Red Bulls U23 in USL League Two.[7] In 2022, he played with the Long Island Roughriders in USL League Two.[8]
In December 2022, Reid signed a homegrown player contract with Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls for the 2023 season, with club options from 2024 through 2026.[9] He spent the majority of the season with the second team, New York Red Bulls II in MLS Next Pro,[10] making his professional debut with them on March 25 against Columbus Crew 2.[11] He made his MLS debut on May 17 against Toronto FC.[12] At the end of the 2023 season, the club declined his option for the following season.[13]
In February 2024, he signed with St. Louis City 2 in MLS Next Pro for the 2024 season, with an option for 2025.[14] In June and July 2024, he signed short-term loans with the St. Louis City SC first team on three occasions.[15][16][17] He made his first team debut on June 22 against Atlanta United FC, playing the full 90 minutes and earning an assist.[18][19] In July 2024, he signed a full contract with the first team for the remainder of 2024, with options for 2025 and 2026.[20][21]
Style of play
[edit]Playing chiefly at the left-back position, Reid is capable of playing as a wing-back and wide midfielder. Reid possesses exceptional acceleration and pace and has the habit of beating defenders on the overlap.[22] Reid also often attempts tricks and skill moves to varying degrees of success.[23]
