Biography

[edit]

Early life

[edit]

Growing up in a multilingual and multi-religious household, Jamila was exposed to diverse traditions and customs from an early age.[3][2]

At just 16, Jamila moved to the United States to attend George Washington University. There, in her third year, she had the opportunity to attend an etiquette workshop, where she first encountered the professional world of etiquette.[3][2]

In 2012, she graduated from The George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs with a major in International Affairs and double minors in History and Sociology.[2][4][5]

For her postgraduate studies, Jamila moved to Bruges, Belgium, to attend the College of Europe, where she got her Master’s Degree in European Political and Administrative Studies. There, she also participated in a masterclass on diplomatic protocol and dining etiquette.[3][4][5]

After finishing her studies, she moved back to Baku and began teaching at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy. There, she noticed a gap in the education of young professionals, particularly their lack of social skills and polished manners. This realization led her to pursue a certification in etiquette and eventually establish herself as an etiquette consultant.[6] She completed an intense seven-day course at the International Etiquette and Protocol Academy of London.[1]

Etiquette career

[edit]

Jamila’s teachings cover a wide range of topics, from etiquette and body language to beauty and lifestyle advice. Her most popular work includes practical skills such as formal dining rules, job interview tips, and elegant living.[6]

She started her YouTube channel in 2019 and began posting videos specifically on dining etiquette, soft and social skills, and body language exercises. Motivation and personal development are also among the important topics in her work. The channel quickly gained popularity and in 2024 exceeded one million subscribers.[7]

Even before she started her channel, she published her first book Etiquette: The Least You Need to Know. The book is a guide to the basics of etiquette.[8] Later, along with the growing popularity of the channel, she published two more books: Afternoon Tea Etiquette: The Least You Need to Know and The Art of Entertaining at Home. Speaking of her books, she stated that her main goal was for them to be applicable to modern living while being concise and comprehensible,[1] thus easily understood by everyone, regardless of their age, gender or background, and for this reason they consist of short and structured sentences and clear explanations.[8]

She conducts private and group workshops on etiquette and personal development not only in Azerbaijan, but also internationally, meeting with clients through private sessions both in person and via online platforms.[9]

She has given numerous interviews to several media outlets, including Bussiness Insider, Newsweek, Fox News, Huffington Post, Arabian Bussiness and Daily Mail, or has been cited by them as an expert.[10][unreliable source?].[11][12][13][14][15] Additonally, she made some television appearances, both in her home country as well as abroad, e.g. in WFLA-TV.[16][17][18]

In 2023, she was featured in "She’s Mercedes" campaign video of Mercedes‑Benz company, where she was able to tell her success story.[19]

Views on etiquette

[edit]

Jamila believes that etiquette evolves with societal norms and modern living. Through her videos, she debunks myths about etiquette being outdated and emphasizes its importance in contemporary society. She highlights that while certain practices have changed, the core principles of respect and politeness remain constant.[6]

She stated that her main aim is to "bring etiquette back to fashion". She hopes that etiquette "will soon be reintroduced back into academic curriculum in schools and universities like it used to be".[8]

Personal life

[edit]

She is married and has two children.[8] She stated that she aims to maintain her privacy and will not share too many details.[1]

She is multilingual; she can speak six languages, with Azerbaijani, English and Russian amongst others.[4]

She is a co-founder of the Gymbala, a first baby gym in Baku, Azerbaijan.[1]

She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa (oldest academic honor society in US) and Golden Key (world’s largest college honor society).[5]

She is a Muslim, but considers herself "more spiritual than ritualistic or religious".[9]
