Isabella Rodriguez (born 30 November 1993), known professionally as Isabella Lovestory, is a Honduran pop and reggaeton singer based in Montreal, Canada.[1][2][3] Her music has been described as perreo-pop.[4] She collaborated with producer Mura Masa in the development of Amor Hardcore, her first full-length studio album released in 2022.[5]
Early life and education
[edit]Lovestory was born as Isabella Rodriguez in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.[1] Her father was a radio DJ. She moved to the United States state of Virginia with her family at the age of 13,[6] which she described as a culture shock, before moving to Montreal a few years later. She enrolled in art school, but found its rules and structures dissatisfying.[1] She initially started recording music for her cat, first recording in 2018.[1]
Career
[edit]She released her debut single in 2019, and her debut album Amor Hardcore in 2022, with production from her main collaborator Chicken. The album was recognized in various music and culture publications.[6][7][8][9]
Lovestory's music reflects themes of self-expression and women's empowerment.[10][11] She commented that Lovestory is a persona, and enjoys exaggerating her personality and having fun through the character.[11] Lovestory's character embraces her own sexual objectification and commented: "Mocking men is fun. Mocking what society views as degrading to women is fun, because nobody gets to decide what a woman's true desires are."[2]
In late 2022, she played at the Pop Montreal festival[5] and release her full-length album Amor Hardcore, which was longlisted for the 2023 Polaris Music Prize.[12] It was also ranked at 21st in the "50 Best Spanish-Language Albums of 2022" by Rolling Stone.[13]
In July 2023, she played at the Festival d'été de Québec where she opened for Pitbull.[citation needed]
She released "Fuetazo" featuring Villano Antillano in December 2023.[14] The song was featured on Pitchfork's weekly selects playlist.[15]
