Heungnyemun (Korean: 흥례문; Hanja: 興禮門) is second gate of Gyeongbokgung, Jongno District, Seoul, South Korea. It was torn down in the 20th century, but was restored along with Gwanghwamun as part of the restoration project from 2001 to 2021.[1]
History
[edit]During the Joseon Dynasty, gatekeepers worked alternately for two hours at the gate. During the Japanese colonial era of the 20th century, Japan demolished Heungnyemun and built a building for the Japanese Government-General of Korea on its spot. However, Heungnyemun was rebuilt on the same spot after independence in 1945.[2]
