Herne Katha is a Nepali web documentary series that includes stories from the underrepresented communities of Nepal. The name Herne Katha, which translates to "Stories to be watched" in English, reflects its ideas to cover such stories. The series recognises Nepal's diverse socio-economic and cultural landscape.
Overview
[edit]Herne Katha was co-founded by Bidhya Chapagain and Kamal Kumar. It first premiered on YouTube in March 2018 . Stories feature individuals and communities from different parts of Nepal.
Format and Style
[edit]The series uses a documentary-style approach, often filming in natural settings without scripted dialogue or heavy production. It employs a minimalist and raw aesthetic, using everyday conversations, local dialects, and real-life footage to capture the essence of life in Nepal’s rural and urban areas. The filmmakers travel across the country to meet the subjects in their homes, workplaces, or environments, allowing the audience to witness their lives up close.
Themes and Subjects
[edit]Herne Katha's subjects span a wide range of social, cultural, and economic issues. Some of the prominent themes covered include:
- Migration and Remittance: Many episodes feature stories of Nepali migrants working in foreign countries, highlighting their personal and familial struggles.
- Gender and Social Justice: The series also showcases the stories of women, the LGBTQ+ community, and individuals challenging traditional gender norms.
- Indigenous Communities: Herne Katha has focused on the unique cultures and challenges of Nepal's indigenous groups, such as the Tharu, Tamang, and Chepang.
- Poverty and Livelihoods: A significant portion of the stories highlight people struggling to make a living in Nepal's challenging economic environment, particularly those in agriculture, labor, and informal sectors.
- Human Rights and Activism: The show features activists and ordinary citizens advocating for rights, land reforms, and environmental protection.
Impact and Reception
[edit]Herne Katha has been lauded for its empathetic and human-centered approach to journalism, emphasizing individual stories rather than general statistics or political discourse. Its episodes resonate deeply with both Nepalis and an international audience, many of whom praise the series for portraying Nepal in an honest and dignified way.
The show has played a pivotal role in bringing issues such as migration, caste discrimination, and gender-based violence to the forefront of national discourse. It has also been instrumental in promoting a more nuanced understanding of Nepal’s diverse population, beyond the stereotypes commonly portrayed in mainstream media.
Collaborations and Funding
[edit]Unlike traditional media outlets, Herne Katha operates independently, relying primarily on audience contributions and crowdfunding. The team also collaborates with local organizations, NGOs, and sometimes media houses to support their storytelling endeavors. Despite limited resources, they maintain a strong commitment to editorial independence and unbiased reporting.
Challenges
[edit]One of the main challenges faced by the Herne Katha team is the financial and logistical difficulties of producing high-quality content in remote and often inaccessible parts of Nepal. Moreover, the show operates without a consistent revenue stream, as it is largely funded by donations and occasional sponsorships. The creators have managed to sustain the project through sheer passion, public support, and dedication to the craft of storytelling.
Influence on Nepali Media Landscape
[edit]Herne Katha has contributed to a shift in how media in Nepal approaches storytelling. By focusing on long-form, in-depth, and empathetic human stories, the series has inspired other content creators and journalists to explore similar models. It stands as a testament to the power of digital platforms like YouTube in giving voice to marginalized communities and creating impact-driven content.
Future Prospects
[edit]As Herne Katha continues to grow, the creators remain committed to documenting the untold stories of Nepal’s people. The show’s success points to the increasing importance of digital media in reaching audiences who are hungry for authentic, grassroots storytelling. While the future may present new challenges in terms of sustainability, Herne Katha's impact on Nepali media is undeniable, and it is likely to remain a significant force in documenting the lives and voices of Nepal’s forgotten people.
Reception
[edit]The show has been hugely popular among Nepali audiences and it has gained a lot of praises in social media. Journalist Mohan Guragain in The Kathmandu Post stated, "Within a year of the team launching their audio-visual platform for storytelling, the channel has won hearts and set itself apart from the rest—mostly with intriguing stories of the common people’s suffering." He further adds, "Uploaded at regular intervals of two weeks, ‘Herne Katha’ videos have been a powerful journalistic tool. For one, in a country where qualified and well-paid government teachers shirk their duties, causing freefall in the quality of public school education, an episode of ‘Herne Katha’ tells the story of a teacher who volunteered at a school for years simply because he could not tolerate seeing the happy faces of his pupils overcome by gloom should he have decided to leave."[2]
Shristi Karki in Nepali Times mentioned Herne Katha as 'The Extraordinary Lives of ordinary Nepalis". In her feature story about Herne Katha she writes further "These recent programs on Herne Katha unite Nepalis by showing us the lives of other Nepalis, providing hope and optimism at a time when most have little of both. The series that began airing in 2018 is created by ex-BBC journalists Bidhya Chapagain and Kamal Kumar who are constantly on the road to the remotest corners of Nepal to profile ordinary Nepalis living extraordinary lives.
