How to add | or || visibly into a table

I'm doing a table that needs the use of the character "|" and possibly the string "||". But wikipedia interprets those as table syntax, so how would I add those in? Fresheneesz 21:08, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Use &#123, &#124, &#125; for {, |, } if you don't want them to be interpreted as wikitext / template characters - I've listed all three because 123, 124, 125 for {, |, } is easy to remember. Of course you can always use <nowiki>|</nowiki> to protect characters from interpretation as Wiki markup, magic word, etc. -- Omniplex 22:36, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

How to have a table inline

I want to insert a 2-row table inside a line to list a date, in two calendars (say Gregorian and Coptic), instead of writing date-1 then date2. What do I need to declare to avoid line breaks before and after the table?
I want to put such code in a template that takes the two dates as parameters.

Seperate question

I would like to have a table with no visible borders internal or external to just lay out some text. But I want the text to spread over the whole line (ie it should be as long as the vertical line between sections on this talk page). I have this: (but I don't know why it's the last thing in my post either! that's not where I wanted it, I want it ABOVE the line "Questions:")

Questions:

Do I need the "td and /td" at the start and end?

My width tags just make each column the same size. How do I make the row take the whole available line rather than the minimum available space, without abusing the cellpadding tag?

How do I get it to show up in the right place (tm)

Note: In this original 2006 post, the author omitted the closing |} at the end of the table, causing the table to display at the end of the post, as the author noted at the time. As more sections were added, the table continued to move to end of this talk page. The missing table-closing markup caused more errors when another user added another table. In order to fix everything, I have inserted the missing |}, so the table now displays in the right place. —Anomalocaris (talk) 08:04, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Keeping data together

I'm working on a page for Weird Mystery Tales, an anthology comic with 3-4 features per issue. I modeled the table on the one for Marvel Presents, but the challenge here is making it clear which artist, writer, host, and note goes with each story. I couldn't find any help on the page. Asterisks as bullets faile, colons failed. Now it looks like Berni Wrightson drew "The Wizard's Gift", whcih wasn't credited, and probably from before Wrightson had a professional career. Rows with different numbers of columns

I'm trying to make a table with six columns on top, and four on bottom. I've gone through everything, and I just can't make the bottom four expand to fill the whole table.

Hey, thanks for taking a look. No, actually, I want to stretch out the bottom part to be as wide as the rest of the table. For some reason, Wikitext doesn't allow columns to be broken. Oh, and if possible I'd like the text to be as small as possible.

In fact, I hope this doesn't tick you off, but this is the exact opposite of what I wanted to do. It's just a whole separate table at the bottom now, the text is bigger, and the table itself is much larger because many of the entries take up more than one line. The whole point of stretching it out was to reduce space. I want it thin and elegant, with as little verticle space as possible.

I wanted to keep "Smaller Parties" as one bar across, and then below it have a four-column table (unlike the six above) as wide as the table above. Everything I tried either pushes it to the left or squeezes it in the middle. Hey no problem. At least now it's clearer what you wanted—I think. On one hand you want it smaller, but on the other you want it wider? Breaking columns is a feature of tables: otherwise why use them?

Sweet! Seriously. I guess I was just worried that by having two tables, something would go wrong. So the way it is now is pretty good. I'd like it if the borders were more clear, but whatever. The main thing is making the text smaller. Now, when I went to some random page to steal their table formatting, it came with the following: {| border="1" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" class="references-small" style="border:1px solid #aaa; border-collapse:collapse". I'm not altogether sure how, but that made it smaller. Meanwhile, Wikipedia's website is so unconscionably slow right now -- I have no idea why -- which makes screwing around with these things much more taxing. So I put another version of the table below (if it ever loads, that is)...and hey! That looks pretty good! Go check it out! Other than the borders in the empty corner, that's pretty damn sweet. NICE!

So other than formatting the links and what not, I think we're good to go! Okay! So, I think it will take about 45 minutes to write. Stay tuned for The Transformation of Italian Politics, 1990-1996!

Text in the vertical direction

I'm working on a table for census questions. Some of the questions are long but the answer is very short. For instance I'd like a collum header to say "Age at first marriage" and then below will be entered 19, or 25. To keep from using excess space I'd like the header to run vertically up the screen. Actually I'd like the text to read from the bottom up, much as this text is from the left to the right. Enabling the first column to be only 2 or 3 digits in width.

Now it's clear. I don't know of a way for a table (wiki or HTML) to do that. I looked for it being done successfully, but couldn't find any examples. Syntax for applying styles to all table rows and/or table cells?

How to make a long list have two columns so that you cut down on length?

Ok. I got this table as below. It is very long. So I want it to have two sets of columns. Instead of there being just 'year' and 'album', I want it to have 'year', 'album', 'year', 'album', so the long table becomes half the original length. You get what I mean? Improving lay-out

Can anybody have a look at the template used at 2006 European Athletics Championships? When it comes to the event by event medal sections there is a difference between the widths of the gold/silver and bronze sections. It also varies when you add another similar table for instance when adding a womens section. In that case the both tables vary in total width, but also the width between gold/silver/bronze in the same table as in the other table are different everywhere. I was wondering whether this could be improved so these tables would give the same widths all the time, which in my opinion would look a lot better. Mirror Line with column

i got a list of 40 words in alphabetic order. If i do a table with say 5 columns the words appear alphabetic in a line. But i want the words to be alpabetic in a column. How can this be done, without mixing up the alphabetic list? I want to "mirror" the line with the column. I want the words to be alphabetic in a column because, the gaps between the words in a line differ, the gaps in a column are always the same. So it would be easyer to read the alphabetic list column by column. Can someone please help? The gaps between the the columns are the same because i used width="200pt".

Ok, so first question: is there an easy way to make sure the columns are the same width?

Yes, specify the width as a attribute. See the previous topic source (click on "edit") for an example of five columns forced to 200 pixel width.

Second: Can you say a column shoud be X% of the entire table?

I don't think so directly. But indirectly, each can be set to a percent of the available width for the table.

Third: Can you say I want this table in the center, but it should not float

That's explained in Help:Table#Centering_tables, though the solution is obscure.

Fourth: What is class (I think it's class, at one point in the multiplication table it says something like class="wikitable")?

It invokes a collection of styles for elements like border style, width, font, color, etc. Dig through your (and the system) monobook.css and the various .css's invoked to find the defined elements and other possible class styles.

HTML - much easier

The point of Wiki Code is to make it easier for non technical users - but in this case HTML is so much easier. I so no point of the pipeline syntax. Comperr 23:35, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

So this page says you should put quotes around everything (like border="1") - but for some reason on this page (my own) whenever I put quotes around the values it doesn't work (and when I take out all the quotes it does) - feel free to fool around with it, as long as it can wind up how it was - (Note:the ones that significantly change things are border, cellpadding, and the rowspan of the long section). --Daniel()Folsom ^T|_C|^U 17:48, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Wiki Table in If statement

I am trying to put wiki table in #if: statement but when a value for the variable is not found or a space character is found instead of skiping the display of any cell at all, I get empty cells. In many working templates, I have seen that instead of wiki table, HTML table is used in #if:

Are there any technical obstacles in using wikitable with wiki syntax's If statement? Is it necessary to use HTML table in If statement?

I want different sized cells in each row

Efficient way to add rows or columns to a table requested

Hi! I'm looking for a way to easily edit a table I made here: from time to time I add new columns (i.e. new adjectives) and this takes more and more time as the table grows bigger. What is the fastest way to add scientific adjectives (i.e. vertical columns) to the table and keep the alphabetical order? For now I copy/paste all new items to the columns of all sciences.. Is it the case that new adjectives are added more frequently than new disciplines? In that case, invert the table so only a row need be added for a new adjective, a trivial edit.

If that's not acceptable, use an HTML editor on the table to add a new column, then save the HTML markup for the table. There are some HTML to wikitable markup converters available, if you want the article to be written that way, but HTML table markup works too on a wiki page. —EncMstr 01:09, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Differences between browsers

Sometimes I make a table look good in my browser (Opera), and when I check it in another browser, it doesn't look right. Basically, Opera and IE seem to match up well, but then Firefox will display it very poorly. here is an example that fixes it for firefox. Basically, the width of the columns has to be specified. Now, this messes up the table in Opera, which is OK I guess because we're so few in number. Is there some general explanation so I can work in an informed manner without having to check a page in each browser? Also, it seems silly that firefox can't display a table which autosizes its columns, or is this our fault? - Peregrine Fisher 00:03, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure what the problem is. I looked at several recent versions of List of Drake & Josh episodes and didn't seen any layout difference in Firefox 2.0, IE 6.0, and SeaMonkey. I varied my browser width from 500px wide up to 1280px in each case, and tried it logged in as well as anonymously. What does "not look right" mean? —EncMstr 01:18, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

In Opera, this version; the furthest right cell in the top row in each entry (containing: "Pilot" January 11, 2004 101 1 1) doesn't align on the right with the cell on the bottom (containing: Drake gets shocked when he moves in with Josh, and he mocks him with his hysterical secret.) Maybe Template:Episode list needs to be adjusted. Opera is like 1% or browsers, so it doesn't matter much. This version in firefox doesn't show the cell seperators for the first five entries or the header, then shows them for the sixth entry. - Peregrine Fisher 02:29, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

wikitable sortable

Where can I go to make a suggestion for wikitable sortable? I think it could be quite usefull for lists of titles (films, novels, etc.), but I was wondering if it's possible to have it ignore the words "the", "a", and so on at the beginning of the title, as is commonly done when sorting films alphabetically. You can do it ugly style with <span style="display:none">what_you_want_it_sorted_by</span>what_shows_up. Sorta Broken?

class="sortable wikitable" worked well when I set up the table Nilgiris_(mountains)#List_of_peaks_in_the_Nilgiri_Hills and others I learned from by example, but now they only sort the first column. I made changes which removes the empty fifth column, and makes all remaining four columns sortable. There are other issues with empty fields and how context is lost after sorting, so look it over carefully—a revert might be in order. —EncMstr 20:26, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Multiple tables in one row

I have a table that's rather long and narrow (only two columns). I'd like to split it in two parts and display them side by side, so instead of one table that's a page long and big empty space next to it I have two shorter tables running in parallel. Floating tables good or bad??

The page says

Do not, under any circumstances, use "float" to position a table.
It will break page rendering at large font sizes.

Yet one paragraph below, it is explained how to produce a floating table. I think either the negative advise or the how-to should be removed Jasy jatere 23:27, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Well, it's the way all infoboxes are created, and yes, the infoboxes do cause problems when the ratio font size / window width gets large. This really has to be solved. I think a good solution would be to turn floating tables into normal full width tables when they get larger than say half of the window width. Shinobu 04:22, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Bad Link in this Page

The "Mediawiki edit toolbar" link found in the "Using the Toolbar" section (copy of which is quoted below) only links to a "Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name." but the link is a "blue" link. I thought links to non-existent pages were "red"

Method 1: float the tables left and right

Method 2: place both tables into another table with one row and two columns.

underneath each other

And how can I put two tables (at the beginning of an article) underneath each other? My tables always end up, being side by side, and only after enough text has been added, the second table kinda slides underneath the first one. Filtering?

Is it possible to filter a table so that it only shows rows where one column = X (X could be set by a link, dropdown menu, or radio buttons)? I would like to have a large table and be able to see only sections of it at a time, based on a specific field. Table footnotes --- HOW TO ???

Have tried to use html code of <footnotes> </footnotes> for a table on the page of Eagles and it doesn't work. I have also tried another alternative of caption code and it gave an appearance which is yuki. Macs

I use a Mac and when I try to sort a table that can be sorted, such as the one about cities and temperatures on the sorting page on metawiki, no matter which column I want to sort the information by, it is always sorted by the city's name (I think generally it will sort the table according to the first column). Here's one way to do it. Unfortunately, the wikimarkup is rather ugly.

Help request: Table moves to bottom of page

Hi, Please take a look at the table on this page. In the markup of the page the table directly follows the heading ==Userboxes==. However, when the page is rendered as you will notice the table shows up at the bottom of the page below all other text. I can't figure out what causes this. I thought the whole point of using CSS classes was not to have to use inline CSS. Shouldn't there be CSS classes for left/right floating tables that contain all the proper CSS? Shinobu 17:50, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

See Image:Floating-Wikipedia-tables.png. The same problem occurs on the CGA article as well. It also occurs consistently across all browsers I have: Safari (screenshot), Konqueror, IE and Firefox, regardless of fontsize, and window width. This is why CSS class "wikitable" by itself cannot be used for floating tables, because it lookes hideous. Fixing it would currently necessitate the use of inline CSS, which is to be abhorred. (Thanks for prompting.) Yep, that's the same thing I see. The text isn't obscured, but it is "distracted" by being so close to the image. Odd that your text doesn't fill in under the image. I'm seeing it do that (correctly) with SeaMonkey and FireFox, though at some browser widths, bits of it "touch" the image. Table within a table

Could anyone help - I have created 3 tables on this page here Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal, but to tidy things up I would very much like to put those 3 tables into 1 big table, with each arm of the canal forming a column, and underneath each arm column, would be the 2 columns for location and coordinates. Column background

Does anyone know how to get a column with a background colour without having to add the |style="background:#FAF17F"| text on each individual row? I don't think there exists any convenient way, short of using an editor to do the repetitive work for you. The html editors don't know of any way to optimize it. (The wikitable syntax is closely related to the html table markup.) —EncMstr 06:04, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Except that HTML has the colgroup and col tags, which very conveniently allow markup such as this to be specified. The real WTF is that MediaWiki's sanatizer filters these tags, treating them as if surrounded by a <nowiki>. Shinobu 04:13, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Help With Right Floating Table

I'm trying to float a table on the right side of the body text of the article Juice Plus and can't seem to get it right. The table looks OK but when the code is dropped in at the beginning of the article, all of the article's text appears in the table -- I am trying to keep it left justified outside the table. Can anyone help? Any general suggestions for making the table look better aesthetically (e.g. borders, colors, etc.) would also be appreciated. Thanks. Automatically split table into X columns

Is there a way to have a table autamatically split into a certain ammount of columns?
I ask because i have a long list of rows (growing regulary) and it's hard to split them into 4 columns by moving the 3 | all the times. --89.61.200.168 16:21, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Can't get my table quite right

See User:Kotniski/Sandbox. When I use class=wikitable the cellpadding parameter stops working. When I don't use class=wikitable, the borders of merged cells start disappearing. Templates for various tables might be useful

Wikipedia:How to make a table in wikipedia I started this template page, so people could just copy and paste the code to make the tables they want. I personally think a page with table examples and templates to copy and paste is more user friendly than having to read through all the stuff on the current Help:Table page. Though I think there is a need for both pages, because the current help page explains the whole process, so it's more educational for people who want to really understand what they are doing, rather than quickly just creating a table. Further templates could be added to it and/or a standard table/s could appear there to help make wikipedia tables consistent. A vivid dreamer (talk) 04:26, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Auto-generation of nbsp tags for empty cells

Tables with empty cells are rendered by some browsers without grid lines around empty cells.

This can be unsightly as here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol_(data_page)#Properties_of_aqueous_ethanol_solutions

It would be possible, but very tedious, to manually add nbsp tags to all empty cells in the table cited above.

I looked at it. It offers three suggestions:

• Adding nbsp tags manually, which I noted as being tedious.
• Doing something in CSS:

• With which I am not familiar, and
• The link notes that it "works less often than the nbsp hack."

• Inserting some "intentionally empty" marker manually, which would be as tedious as entering nbsp tags manually.

I don't use CSS. I don't like CSS. I usually browse with it turned off because too many page designers, including Wikipedia, insist on specifying a glaringly bright background for their text.

My _personal_ computer allows me to set the default background colors used by Windows. Web designers are entirely too eager to override my preferred color scheme with their CSS. So I don't usually let them do it.

I would still prefer that the wiki-code interpreter insert nbsp tags for blank cells -- putting borders around empty cells without dictating what colors I "should" be using to view the page.

Here is my attempt to put the suggested CSS code in a context by borrowing an example from the help page (but omitting the 'class' tag):

Which works _if_ I enable CSS and endure the glaring background color, which I am generally loathe to do.
