I moved this to Wikipedia:Media help (audio and video). That's what the link at Wikipedia:Media help already said. This will allow it to more easily address WebM and other allowed free formats. Superm401 - Talk 21:30, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

what moron retard thinks this is a good idea?

it's like fukking 1997 here with downloadin special "plugins" with stupid names from some idiot science fiction movie or something. and which don't work anyway. wikipedia hardly ever makes a bad decision, but you've made an absolutely braindamaged one here. 69.181.168.139 (talk) 04:39, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia is using the standard, some manufactures wish to be proprietary. If you are using non-standard software or hardware and thus prompted to download plugins, that's your problem. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 21:46, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
iPhone 4S, iOS7. Not really non-standard hardware or software, is it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.102.36.16 (talk) 01:29, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
iOS software is entirely specific to Apple. Contact Apple (https://www.apple.com/contact/) and let them know you want them to the unrestricted open container format Ogg. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 11:17, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
I did, they told to ask Wikipedia to use a file format that other people actually use — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.102.36.16 (talk) 12:54, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

Where to go to discuss modifications to the player?

I'm interesting in opening a discussion about moving/shrinking the size of the play button on in-article videos so that the video still image can provide use as a screenshot when the video is not being played. As it is, the play button is permanently present, in the center of the preview and large enough to be making it less useful in and out of motion. Information please? Thanks. Windows RT 8.1

How can I make my Dell XPS-10 see Wikipedia motion pictures? I have failed to find a method in Windows Store. Jim.henderson (talk) 17:08, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

Windows 7

My old desktop with Vista works fine with Wikipedia and OGG but I needed a portable one so bought a Windows 7 netbook. It wouldn't play OGG videos in articles including one I put in Trikke. So, I installed VLC. Still no go. So, Java. That made it work. Minor nuisance to me, but it must be an insoluble problem to that majority of computer owners who never install a program much less search for information about which program would be appropriate. Is my initial failure typical of Windows 7 users? If so, I consider it a terrible thing. Wikipedia should be readable not just for me but for people even more ignorant than me. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:29, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia is free and open. Microsoft is not free and it's 'free' browser supports only it's format that it licenses and costs. Wikipedia could pay both Microsoft a few $million to be licensed so it work for Microsoft own customers or they could help users use open software such as FireFox and browsers that support open standards such as Opera and Chrome. I'd prefer Wikipedia is open and keep the money for it's own projects. That said this page and Wikipedia in general is poor at informing users and could be updated greatly. The solution for ignorant people is to educate. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 11:20, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Sorry to return to this question so late, but learning to cope in the past year and a half has only irritated me more. Back then, plenty of people were still buying real computers. Nowadays they are declining, and smartphones and tablets (few of which are Microsoft) are in the exponential growth part of their Logistic function. Their users know even less, and no matter what kind of device they're using, most people don't know how to fix them when they can't do something, any more than they know how to repair plumbing and automobiles. Perhaps the licenses will cost a few million dollars to bring those hundreds of millions of users on board, but most Websites have managed the price whatever it is.

Yes, educating the ignorant is what Wikipedia is about. On the whole, despite many little failures, we do pretty well at that job, but it's hard to see how computer tech is among the most dangerous of the many kinds of ignorance in today's world. Meanwhile, if someone thinks sending motion pictures to Wikipedia is not a waste of time, they should also send a copy to Youtube or other site that has bought a license, and link there in the file description and in the caption. Application Blocked by Security Settings?

OGG in Central Park

Hello, I am using the 64-bit version of Microsoft Internet Explorer and every time I try to play an .OGG file, I get an error message saying "Application Blocked by Security Settings. Name: pid_mwe_player_3. Location: http://bits.wikmedia.org. Your security settings have blocked an untrusted application from running." What could be causing this error message and how do I fix it? Thanks. Illegitimate Barrister 13:52, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

Using Windows 8, I too have been confused by this, and can only guess that it's an incorrect message about the software's lack of support for this unusual video format. However, Mozilla Firefox shows OGG videos including my own in Central Park. So, it seems MSIE is incompatible with Wikimedia video. Some are inclined to blame Microsoft; some to blame the Wiki establishment. I prefer to blame both but that's a matter of taste. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:11, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
Same here. It's driving me crazy, when it works fine on other browsers, I.E. seems to be bugging up. Illegitimate Barrister 14:46, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
I forgot to mention, besides this desktop running Windows 8.1, which can use alternate browsers, my Dell XPS-10 tablet also runs Win 8.1 and cannot use other browsers. This leaves the tablet unable to see Wiki motion even though it can see moving pictures in almost all other websites. Unfortunately it wouldn't help to upload the video to Youtube, the biggest video sharing site, and link to there, because such links are blacklisted. Also the Wikipedia app for Windows 8.1 does not show me motion. Taken as a whole, the results wouldn't look much different if someone here in the Wikicomplex were trying hard to prevent video from becoming too useful in Wikipedia. XiphQT Plugin for Safari no longer functions

The XiphQT Component for Mac no longer plays .ogg within Safari. Prior to Quicktime 10, there was a bug where Quicktime did not automatically update its MIME associations for .ogg files and thus did not recognize the files as playable. This was fixable by checking and unchecking some boxes in Quicktime preferences. This bug still exists, but since Quicktime 10, Quicktime preferences cannot be modified without the command line, and there are no known commands to modify the necessary preferences. Therefore there is no longer any way to get XiphQT working in Safari.

The XiphQT component was last updated almost five years ago. Unless someone can find a fix for this issue, I recommend removing the reference to this Safari .ogg solution. 50.178.208.203 (talk) 05:34, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Somebody please remove the XiphQT section from the "Help guide". The codec no longer works and I can't figure out a way of playing wikipedia audio on Safari. I know this is Apple's fault, but it's still a bit of a joke that the "help section" lists it. 82.26.25.222 (talk) 15:05, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
