Advocate Hassan Babur Nehru, also known as Babar Bhai or Babar Wakeel, is a Kashmiri lawyer and social activist from the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. He is the founder of Ababeel (NGO). He is renowned for his work in advocating for the social and human rights of underprivileged communities in the Chenab Valley region.[2]

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Hassan Babur Nehru was born in 1986 in Doda. He completed his early education in Doda before finishing at JK Public School Kunjwani Jammu. He graduated with a Law degree from The Law School, University of Jammu, in 2010. In January 2019, he resigned from his position as an in-charge Law Officer to practice as a private advocate.[3]

Activism and Arrests

[edit]

Advocate Nehru is recognized for his commitment to serving economically disadvantaged communities. He engages in public awareness campaigns about human, social, political, and religious rights and leads protests addressing socio-political issues.[3] He has actively participated in human rights cases and has been vocal against violations in Jammu and Kashmir.[4][5]

Nehru has faced multiple arrests under the Public Safety Act, first in 2016 and then again in 2017, resulting in a detention in Kot Bhalwal Jail.[6][7] In 2018, he was arrested again and held for several months.[4] These arrests have drawn criticism from human rights organizations, which argue they were aimed at silencing his activism.[2][8][9]

In 2014, Nehru established the NGO "Ababeel," which focuses on disaster management and relief operations in the Chenab Valley.[10] The organization has been instrumental in providing assistance during natural disasters, including the floods in Kashmir in 2014.[3]

He is listed in the activists and journalists who are on surveillance of Pegasus.[11]

Personal Life

[edit]

Advocate Nehru is married and has three sons. In March 2023, he launched a Horse Riding Academy called "Fursaan," aimed at promoting healthy sports activities among youth in the region.[3]
