The sky view of HBA

Haileybury Almaty commonly known as HBA[1] is an international boarding school in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It is an offshoot of Haileybury, an English public school. In September 2008 HBA was officially opened by the Mayor of Almaty and Kazakhstan government education officials. When it opened, it was the first British public school in Central Asia.[2]

As of today, HBA is a full member of the Federation of British International Schools in Asia(FOBISIA).[3]

History

[edit]

HBA was established in 2007 with the laying of the first stone of its building. It officially opened its doors to students in September 2008, with the inauguration ceremony attended by the Mayor of Almaty. In its early years, Haileybury Almaty hosted distinguished guests, including the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and the UK Minister of Higher Education, David Lammy MP.

Between 2010 and 2015, the school experienced significant growth and expansion, offering a wider range of academic programs and extracurricular activities. It also hosted[clarification needed] notable figures like Prince Michael of Kent, David Beckham, and Sir Roger Moore.

From 2015 to 2020, HBA embraced innovation and technology integration into the learning experience, focusing on 21st-century skills like critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy.

In recent years, the school has navigated global challenges, including the need for remote learning during the pandemic. The commitment of teachers, students, and parents strengthened the Haileybury Almaty community during these times.

Academic Excellence

[edit]

Haileybury Almaty is known for its academic excellence, with students consistently achieving outstanding results in international examinations.[4][5][6]

Graduates have secured placements at prestigious universities worldwide, including Harvard, MIT, Texas Tech, Yale, Stanford, Caltech, Columbia, Brown, Pennsylvania, Cornell, Cambridge, Oxford, UCL, LSE, St Andrew's, and others. The school's comprehensive college counseling program and personalized guidance have been instrumental in these achievements.

Students have also excelled in FOBISIA competitions, showcasing their academic and sports talents. The school offers enrichment programs and partnerships, providing opportunities for students to engage in activities beyond the classroom, such as Model United Nations conferences, scientific research projects, and cultural exchanges.

FOBISIA

[edit]

HBA joined FOBISIA in 2019, and is accredited by an approved inspectorate.[7] The school had hosted and won many FOBISIA events in the past, both academic and sports competitions.[8] In FOBISIA, where there are 3 regional subdivisions, region A, B, and C, HBA is labelled as region C.[9]

Houses

[edit]
The four houses of Haileybury Almaty

The House system at HBA is a cornerstone of its success. The system fosters a strong sense of community within each House (Attlee, Bartle Frere, Edmonstone, and Kipling), creating smaller, supportive groups within the larger school context. This encourages camaraderie among students of all ages and backgrounds, promoting teamwork and support, reflecting the emphasis on family in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. House competitions, encompassing academics, sports, and charitable endeavors, ignite friendly rivalry, motivating students to excel and contribute to their House's achievements. This translates to stronger school spirit and shared identity. Over the past fifteen years, the House system has contributed to Haileybury Almaty's university successes, positive development, and reputation for nurturing well-rounded, engaged young people.[citation needed]

Curriculum

[edit]

HBA follows a British type curriculum, and offers IGCSE and A Levels.[10] The school teaches pupils from 5–18 years of age and follows the British National Curriculum, which is adapted for local context.[11] Every pupil at Haileybury schools in Kazakhstan is assigned to one of four Houses within the school: Attlee, Bartle Frere, Edmonstone or Kipling.[12]

The school library has a collection of over 10,000 books and DVDs in English, Russian, and Kazakh.[13]
