Greater London Council leadership of Desmond Plummer

The Greater London Council leadership of Desmond Plummer refers to the period during which Desmond Plummer, a British Conservative Party politician, was Leader of the Greater London Council (GLC). Plummer took up the post in 1967, and remained in office until the he lost the election in 1973.

Policies

Plummer's administration of the GLC took control of London Transport in 1970.[1] London Transport ran the Underground and the buses.[1]

On 2 August 1967, the GLC opened the second Blackwall Tunnel.[2]

During the Plummer administration of the GLC, the concept of "gentrification" within London was first identified.[3]

The Plummer administration's policies on housing included encouraging tenants of social housing to buy their homes.[1]

The first Greater London Development Plan was released in draft in 1969.[4]
